MacNeill exits game trailing
Hawaii rallies to maintain The Daff's undefeated streak
Daffy MacNeill, the true boy scout, saw his six-game winning streak end August 15
when he departed the game against the so-called Sluggers in the top of the 7th,
trailing 5-4. MacNeill had just allowed only his 3rd home run of the year.
"Ain't nothing against Liao," MacNeill said, "but iffn I was playing left field, I wouldda
caught that ball."
It was Liao who answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run blast, his 25th
of the season, to get MacNeill off the hook for the loss. Daffy struck out 8 in 6 1/3
innings, allowed 5 hits and 5 runs (four earned), and one walk.
Hawaii went ahead for good in the 8th when pinch hitter Sadaharu Oh, Jr hit a single
to left center off reliever Nathan Campbell, scoring co-patriot Yamaguchi Kanzaburo
(Yama-kan) from second.
"Co-patriots?" said team spokesperson Stitch Lilo. "Sure, they are both of Japanese descent,
but Oh was born in New Mexico and Y (Yamaguchi) wasn't born in Japan, either."
Note: MacNeill exited his next start trailing also, but Hawaii rallied against Chicago to
preserve his undefeated streak.
