The Hawaii Tropics drop their 5th game out of their last six as the Surfers take Game 1. Hawaii starter Daniel Thornton staked the Surfer to a 2-0 lead but watched his team tie the score an inning later. In the 3rd inning, he gave his 2nd homer of the game and left after 4.2 innings of work. He struck out five batters, but those homers were the deciding factor.
The Tropics offense managed a couple of runs on seven hits but fanned 10 times and didn’t draw any walks. Jorge Dodd was the Hawaii offense with a two-run homer (7) in the top of the 2nd.

The Tropics offense blistered the Long Beach pitching staff for 12 runs on 17 hits to even the series. 10 of the 17 hits were for extra bases with three homers, a couple of triples and a handful of doubles. Every Tropic in the lineup got in on the action save for Mitch Wareham who was 0 for 4 with a walk and a ribbie.
Semih Gurani set the tone on the mound allowing just a run on three hits and a couple of walks while striking out one in four innings. Marty Pearce allowed a run on a couple of hits with two Ks in 1.1 innings. Reynaldo Trinidad and Jose ‘Mr. Reliable’ Valle put up zeroes the rest of the way to close out the game.

The Tropics were cruising after putting up five unanswered runs through 4 1/2 when the Surfers responded with a four-run rally in the home half of the 5th. The Surfers drew three walks, singled three times and chased Martin ‘Lumps’ Garcia from the game with two outs. Alex Garcia came on in relief to pour polluted water on the rally to end it. Utkan Gocek and Bob Westbrooks laid the smackdown for four innings keeping the Surfers scoreless.
Rookie Vicente ‘Yogi’ Martinez was 4 for 5 with a double (7), scored a run and drove in one. Jorge Dodd and Lorenzo Holloway each homered. Dodd hit his 9th in the 4th and Holloway his 3rd in the 2nd inning.
Hawaii wins the series 2-1.
