The Tropics held a slim, one run lead over the Bears going into the top of the 8th inning. Reliever Bob Westbrooks struck out the 1st San Fernando hitter of the inning but walked Tommy ‘Twinkle Toes’ Harrison. ‘Twinkle Toes’ scored on a double by Keith Tims tying the game 6-6.
The game remained tied into the bottom of the 12th when Hawaii mounted a two-out rally. After flyouts by John Harris and Carlos Schumann, center fielder Carlos Sanchez singled. The next hitter, Julian Rivera, fell behind 1-2 but lined a Doug Eckhoff slider down the third base line and into the left field corner. Carlos Sanchez was on his horse at contact and scored from first beating out the throw from Bears SS Jason Steward to score the game winner.

Hawaii reliever Cale Cote blew his 1st save of the season as he served up a homer on a sinker that didn’t sink to Tommy Harrison. Ole Twinkle Toes is a real pain in the ass. In the bottom of the inning, Hawaii received a gift when Bears first baseman Aggur Lugano made a bad throw after fielding a hard-hit ball to the hole by Carlos Schumann. Schumann moved to second after Carlos Sanchez drew a four-pitch walk. Vincente Mendez hit a deep fly to left center that allowed Schumann to tag up and make it to third before the throw by Miguel Lussier. That brought Game 1 hero Julian Rivera to the plate with the game on the line once again. Rivera fell behind again as Tomsett overpowered Rivera with fastballs. Tomsett threw his knuckle curve to Rivera but it was launched into left center where it landed in the grass between Lussier and Rafael ‘Rat Race’ Marquis making Hawaii walk off winners.

After falling behind the Trops 8-1 through three innings the Bears claw their way back with seven runs in the 4th inning to tie the game. The teams exchanged single runs in the 6th inning, but the game once again goes into extras. This time the Bears punch through with four runs in the 12th inning then finally silence Hawaii’s bats 1-2-3 to avoid a sweep.
The Tropics offense did put up nine runs with Vincente Mendez going 2 for 5 with three ribbies to lead the team. Vicente ‘Yogi’ Martinez was 3 for 7 with his 9th homer of the season in the 1st inning.
Hawaii starter Slobodan Omeragic couldn’t hold on to the lead given him allowing five runs on four hits and two walks in 3.1 innings. The bullpen fared no better with Jose Ordonez giving up three runs in 2/3 of an inning and Bill Phillips giving up four also in 2/3 of an inning to take the loss.
Hawaii wins the series 2-1.
“The Bears pushed us to the limit adding some stress to our bullpen. July 1st is our next chance to get everyone rested up.” said Hawaii Manager Amato Cruz.
