First news of the day from the Brewster was Hawaii right fielder Vincente Mendez taking home the Player of the Week in the Frick League. Mendez was 11 for 19 with two homers, 7 RBI, scored four times and stole two bases.
The 2058 Yogi Zimmer FL Diamond Glove winner as a left fielder now has 2 Player of the Week Awards.
News from the Trainer’s Room has it that Gheorghe Sollomovici is recovering well from elbow inflammation. Sollomovici should be back in the bullpen in a July.
Rookie catcher Armando Medina bruised his ankle against the Mad Popes. Team Trainer Hector Fabian lists him as day to day for three days but he will not miss a start.
Medina will remain the starter behind the plate for the time being but last season’s #1 pick by the Tropics is almost ready. Bob Webb had a solid 1st week in AAA Death Valley slashing .333/.360/.333 with three ribbies and scored three runs.
Harry Surface is also down in AAA playing third for the Scorpions. He slashed .273/.314/.354 with eight RBI and scored six runs. He will be down in AAA until the end of May in an obvious effort to manipulate his major league time. Surface was the Trops #1 pick in the 2061 BBA Draft.
On the other end of the 2061 Draft is Roberto Lopez. Lopez was taken in the 13th round by Hawaii and has worked his way up to AAA with some bumps across the board. The outfield in crowded on the island and Lopez is ready to be called up in the event of an injury.
Lopez is joined by Atsushi Gato in the Scorpions outfield and has a bit more to go before ready for full time BBA play.
