The Tropics fought for their playoff lives against the Nashville Bluebirds and were tied 2-2 through 9 innings at Les Paul Field. Hawaii put a runner on in the top of the 10th inning on an error with two outs but couldn’t push the run across. In the bottom of the 10th, Utkan Gocek faced young Nashville center fielder Alfonso Gonzales to lead off the inning. Gocek started Gonzales with a cutter and for a ball then a circle change for a strike. Gocek threw another cutter for a ball to make the count 2-1. Gocek shook off his catcher Enrique Mendoza and then tossed up another cutter.
Mistake. Gonzales was on it as it caught too much off the plate and slid into his happy zone. Walk-off and the celebration was on as the Tropics walked off the field in defeat.
Nashville wins the Doubleday Series with Hawaii 4-2 and head to the Cartwright Cup.
“Nashville has such depth and talent. It was too much for us to overcome.” , said Hawaii Manager Rich Kerr.
Hawaii GM Jim Walker broke his season long silence by saying, “We overachieved this season, but it was a fun ride. We have some decisions to make and an opt out to deal with this winter. We’re gonna have some money though, and we’ll reload to give it another go.”
