Hawaii 3 Des Moines 2- Saturday, September 30, 2062

The Hawaii Tropics and Des Moines Kernels struggled with playoff nerves but the Kernels finally broke the ice with two runs on the top of the 6th inning. Des Moines RF Julio Perez connected with a center-cut fastball and deposited it in the left field seats. That woould be the only damage that Niegloslaw Woywitka would suffer in seven innings of work. He gave up two hits, walked three and fanned six.

Hawaii had an answer for the Kernels with a run in the home half of the 6th on a solo blast by SS Carlos Shumann. The score remained at 2-1 until the bottom of the 8th when Hawaii’s offense tallied two runs to take the lead. Vincente Mendez doubled then was driven in with the game tying run by a Vicente ‘Yogi’ Martinez single. LF Eric Owens tripled to the right field corner that allowed Martinez to score from first base with the go ahead run.

Utkan Gocek came on for his 2nd inning of work against the Kernels and put up zeroes again to earn the win for Hawaii. He pitched two innings with a K.

Hawaii is up 1-0 in the series.

Hawaii 5 Des Moines 2- Sunday, October 1, 2062

WP- Marty Pearce (1-0)

LP- Arnold Cantrell (0-1)

Save- Gheorghe Sollomovici (1)

Attendance- 41,863 at ‘Iolani Palace

Hawaii stalwarts Eric Owens and Carlos Schumann drive in two runs each while the Trops pitching staff keeps the pressure on the Kernels offense.

Owens was 1 for 3 with a walk and a two-run homer (1) for his 1st post-season homer of his career. Schumann was 2 for 4 with a couple of RBI singles. Mitch Wareham was 1 for 4 with a solo homer in the 1st inning.

Semih Gurani made the start for Hawaii and pitched 4.2 innings allowing two runs on three hits with a walk while striking out four batters. Marty Pearce took the ball and pitched two scoreless innings allowing two hits and fanning three batters for the win. Gheorghe Sollomovici pitched two scoreless innings allowing a hit while fanning four batters to earn the save.

The Tropics take a 2-0 series lead on the road to Des Moines.

Des Moines 6 Hawaii 2- Tuesday, October 3, 2062

Attendance- 48,516 at Kid Krauss’s Kum and Go Kourtyard

Kernels starter Tommy Akers extends the season for Des Moines with a solid performance against Hawaii. He gave up just two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six Trops in six innings. The bullpen finished the Tropics off with three innings of two hit, scoreless baseball.

Kinzo Iwamoto pitched seven innings for Hawaii allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two batters. He gave up three homers that were hard for his team to overcome. The game got away from Gheorghe Sollomovici as he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two.

Hawaii 3B Jorge Dodd hit his 1st career post season bomb with a solo shot off Akers in the 5th inning. 1B John Harris was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI single.

Des Moines gets back in the series but still trails Hawaii 2-1.

Attendance- 50,195 at Kid Krauss’s Kum and Go Kourtyard

The Kernels and Tropics were in an intense, back and forth battle for playoff glory in Game 4 of the Geoghegan Round Series. The Trops took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on an Enrique Mendoza RBI single. The Kernels tied the score at 1-1 in the 4th on an RBI double by Dan Davidson.

Hawaii responded with a run in the top of the 5th to take a 2-1 lead. The Kernels tied it up again with a run in the home half of the 7th inning. Hawaii took the lead for the final time in the top of the 8th on a solo blast off the bat of John Harris to put the Trops up 3-2. Utkan Gocek recorded the 1st out of the bottom of the 9th then yielded to ‘Crawdad Me’ bin Muta for the save sending the Tropics to the Doubleday Round.

Hawaii wins the series 3-1 over the Des Moines Kernels.

Tropics 1B John Harris was named the series MVP.
