The Hawaii Tropics extend the Valencia Stars epic losing streak with a series opening win. The Stars now have lost 17 straight and 21 of their last 26 games.
Hawaii moved reliever Gheorghe Sollomovici into the rotation to give a struggling Gerardo Rea a break. Sollomovici threw 67 pitches through 3.2 innings allowing a run on four hits and a walk while striking out four. Bill Phillips too over for 2.1 innings giving up just a hit as he earned the win. Rea made an appearance out of the bullpen and still looked awful allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning. Jesus Rios was called upon to quiet things down and threw 2.1 scoreless innings. He gave up a hit and fanned four batters to earn his 2nd save.
LF Eric Owens was 2 for 5 with a double (32), scored a run and had three RBI. He left the game with an injury after that double and was replaced by Lynn Avison. 3B Carlos Antunez was 4 for 5, stole a base (29) and scored two runs. CF Carlos Sanchez was 1 for 4 with a solo homer (15).

Hawaii LF Eric Owens hit a two-run homer (23) in the 8th inning to break a 1-1 tie with the Stars. Hawaii relievers Utkan Gocek and John Moore put up zeroes to secure the win for the Trops. Gocek did the heavy lifting going 1.2 innings with two walks and a K and Moore earned the one out save.
Kinzo Iwamoto made the start for Hawaii going 6.1 innings allowing a run on four hits and a walk while striking out four.

A frustrated Valencia Stars team took out their anger on Hawaii starter Martin ‘Lumps’ Garcia scoring seven runs in four innings. John Moore allowed another run in his two innings as the Stars led Hawaii 8-3. The Trops were hell bent on making the Stars earn the win as they put up four runs in the 8th and tied the game in the 9th with a single run.
In extras, Hawaii rookie Cade Cote got himself into some trouble after walking to batters. He was pulled for side armer Utbah ‘Crawdad Me’ bin Muta to try and get out of the mess. ‘Crawdad’ gave up the game winning single on his 3rd pitch making the Stars a winner and ending the 18-game losing streak.
Eric Owens was 1 for 6 with a solo homer (24). Jorge Dodd was 3 for 5 with two doubles (8), a solo homer (6), scored two runs and drove in two. Lynn Avison was 1 for 3 with a couple of walks and a three-run homer (3) in the 8th inning.

Hawaii starter Niegloslaw Woywitka pitched 7.1 strong innings to pick up his 14th win of the season. He allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two batters. Bob Westbrooks allowed an unearned run on a hit in 1.1 innings before ‘Crawdad Me’ set down the last batter.
DH Yodo “Fungo’ Sato was 2 for 4 with a solo homer (2), a double (18) and drove in two runs. C Enrique Mendoza was 2 for 5 with a double (13) and had two RBI. Eric Owens was 2 for 3 with a double (33), walked twice, scored a run and drove in one.
Hawaii wins the series 3-1.
