REYES CRUNCHES #400
September 4
Honolulu, HI
Hurley Reyes hit a 1-2 pitch from Valencia's Morris Brown over the Blue Whale in right field
in the 11th inning for the 400th home run of the catcher's career. The shot scored Liao
Kuan, who had led off the inning with a single off of Brown, and gave the Tropics an 8-6
walk-off win.
Reyes fell behind in the count by looking at two strikes and then taking a ball. Then he
fouled two balls off at the plate before sending the sixth pitch from Brown 377 feet into the
third row of seats in straightaway right field.
The blast was Reyes's 310 as a catcher—which is the most of any catcher since 1995.
Jeremy Hunter is in second place, nearly a 100 back at 213.
The home run was Reyes's third hit of the game, one that Hawaii had led 6-0 after three
innings before Valencia tied it 6-6 in the top of the ninth. Reyes led off the bottom of the
ninth with a ground out off of Joe Muldrow.
Reyes also hit #300 off of Valencia when he led off the July 21, 2001 home game with a
home run off of righty Phil Leftwich, who starts tomorrow's game at O'ahu; Hawaii would
sweep the four game home stand against Valencia with a win.
Update (July 21): the blast on September 4 remains the lone home run by Reyes in
September, in 70 at bats.
