Is Anyone Surprised?

July 28, 2055

Seiichi Suzuki had a torn back muscle on the day the Sacramento front office selected him in the first round of the 2055 draft. Before that he’s had an abdominal train. And before that once can presume a hang nail and vivid bout of the gout. Still the team selected him—and not for particularly terrible reason, we suppose. The kid is 6’6”, 205 pounds, which when you think about it is a lot of back muscle to tear. He also throws 95 MPH and theoretically throws five pitches.

We say theoretically because he returned to the mound a bit ago, threw three rough innings in a loss, then two more less-than-masterpieces in his next game before leaving with—you got it—a stained abdominal. Effectively his season is over. Welcome to the Popes.

“We’re very excited about all of our young pitchers now that we actually have some,” said GM Ron Collins when prompted by his assistant Carlos Camacho. “As a whole they are better than the empty lockers we had down in Rookie ball to begin with.”

High praise, right?

At this point, the only real question remaining is whether the team’s medical staff missed the boat on this one, or whether the team’s front office overrode the doctor’s veto power.

“We have our ways of doing things,” Camacho quipped from the wings when Collins was asked about the decision.

“Uh, right,” Collins added. “We have our ways.”

In serious matters, with the lower half of the minors in a bit of a rapid-crossfire patchwork of players coming and going, the injury is more than a bit of a blow to the team’s future. Scanning down the list of Sacramento pitching prospects is like looking at a grocery store display of milk bottles. I mean, they’re all pretty much the same, and is anyone going to get really excited over the quart size of the gallon?

Suzuki will turn 19 in the fall.

Let’s hope he recovers.

I like him as a prospect and he was on my list when we were discussing the Kobyashi trade. Kinda relieved you still wanted to deal the catcher.
