Deal Solidifies Bullpen Plans

It was easy to lose amid all the hullaballoo centered on Carlos Flores’s new contract, but the Sacramento baseball club also announced today that they had come to agreement with 28-year-old, left-handed reliever Ludwig Werberg.

Werberg’s deal runs for two guaranteed seasons, and gives the team the option of adding a third to it. If all three seasons are completed, Werberg will pocket $7.8M (minus taxes, agent and handling fees). Rumors suggest his asks were considerably higher, but with numbers dipping a bit this year (4.91 ERA and a new propensity to give up homers), his market value may have dipped.

“I really like it here,” the lefty said. “It’s a beautiful park in a beautiful city. With my contract coming up at the end of the year, my girlfriend and I were beginning to worry about whether we were going to be needing to find a new home someplace. So it’s great to get that stress out of the way and focus back on baseball.”

“Ludwig is a valued member of our pitching staff,” said assistant GM Carlos Camacho, who was standing in for the ill-again, Ron Collins. “He’s struggled a little bit this year, but we’re certain that with a little stability and a little tinkering, he’ll right the ship and get back to his domineering ways.”

The Camacho disappeared and left pitching coach Gabriel Campos to answer questions.

“I’m very happy to have Ludwig in the pen. He’s a steady guy, and a guy I know can throw a lot of innings if we need him to.”

This signing means all of the team's pitchers are under control for the coming season except for Angus Trew, but people inside the organization are saying that conversations have been had with Trew's reps. Hangups were originally money, but now appear to be the arcane ways the league uses to track salary cap in the out years. Closure is expected soon. Assuming this is the case, the picture for what the 2056 pitching staff will look like is firming up, those it appears the team is considering trading stalwart lefty Aaron Anderson. We'll keep our eyes peeled on that.
