YS 25.10 - Nine, Peña Rumors Rise
April 11, 2025:
News today leaks that the Nine and left-handed starter Lorenzo Peña are in discussions about an extension that would keep the 24-year-old in Yellow Springs for several years.
Peña's career record is 23-28 in 63 games, though that is bloated by a rugged 8-14 season as a 22-year-old. His career ERA is 3.36 (3.76 FIP). He defeated Vancouver to start the season 1-0, striking out 6 men in 7.2 innings. He came to the club via the trade route, having been originally signed out of the Dominican by the Atlantic City organization.
"Obviously, we like Lorenzo a lot," said GM RonCo. "He's a young guy who has had some good success in the league, and he's a lefty who throws 98 on the gun. What's not to like? I think he's the kind of guy you can use as part of your cornerstone projecting into the future."

Remember this rule (reminder for newbies):
One concrete contract rule strictly enforced is that any player with less than 5 years of ML service time will not be allowed to sign a contract extension of longer than 3 seasons. Additionally, any player with less than 5 years of ML service time may not be tendered an extension of longer than 3 seasons. Any contract found violating this rule will be nullified and will have to be renegotiated to fit within this rule. Teams that violate this rule will be penalized $10 million from their Bonus Funds.

Yes, that does actually cause some issues here. We'll see if we can get anything done.

Damnable rules! You would have gotten away with it, too...

Indeed. He doesn't want tons, so the question is whether it's worth it to buy out his arbitration or not.

It just struck me this AM that this rule actually invalidates many of the big Rule 6 contracts, doesn't it?recte44 wrote:Remember this rule (reminder for newbies):

If a player reaches FA (which these Rule 6 guys do), then this rule no longer applies.
