Phoenix Talons...1995.5

If loving you is Wong, than I don't wanna be right...

Phoenix GM Hopkins made his second bid for a new catcher in the last two weeks, when he landed Washington Bobwhites catcher, Sterling Wong."

"He's the million dollar man,"confirmed GM Hopkins,"That's all he cost us."

A million dollars may seem a lot of dough for a thirty year old backstop, two years removed from his career high of 21 home-runs. Especially when you consider that the Talon have two other thirty-five year old catchers on the payroll already, with another catcher, budding star Theo Epstien, due back from injury in less than three weeks.

"I thought a million was a lot too,"confirmed GM Hopkins,"But I was Wong. I look at it like this - I could throw a million bucks signing bonus at a draft pick, and the guy could never play a game in the MBBA. I'm paying that same amount for a proven commodity in the prime of his career. Wong is solid, he's a proven player."

When GM Hopkins was pressed on the what he was going to do with six catchers in 1996, making a combined $8.2 million in salary, (a hefty 12% of the entire team's combined salary) - he was less than cordial.

"Stupid reporter,"he sneered,"What the bleep do you know?"

When he was pressed why a team destined to finish well below .500 in 1995 would keep making short term gain transactions, he grew unpleasant; dumping his coffee on the reporters head.

"I play to win,"he screamed,"Every bleepin year! You can't wait until tomorrow in baseball - it might rain! And other such nonsense!"

Things are never dull for very long in Phoenix.

Go Talon!

Wong was red hot in his 27 games with the Talons, but his extension with the club (2 years, over $4.5M per year) is brutal for his skillset.
