Brighter Days Ahead in Nebraska/Daily I.Q.99.5

The talk around Nebraska these days, " are the Barnstormers going to hold on to All Star SP Russell Vanness.""Its a gamble"GM Kiggins told reporters today as the Omaha team (32-51) find themselves one of the worst teams in the MBBA."Our hitting has gone from top 3 last year to 11th this year to rank with one the worst pitching staffs (also ranked 11th). We will clean house by not offering our FA's any new contracts and look towards Free Agency and draft picks to rebuild our team."There are interesting races around the league and an "ACE" to anybody's staff down the road will make any Managers dream come true.Vanness is a work horse and this year is averaging a strike out an inning to go along with a 2.75era.Management will consider all offers including taking on salary if player is FA at end of season but we want prospects and at least 1 to be a SP.

With the 6th pick overall in this years draft the Barnstormers selected 18 yr old who has 1 of the best change-ups our scouts have seen in a long time,he should settle in as solid #2 or #3 in Omaha. He is joined by 20 yr old Mathew Krieger(5-1,1.68,AAA) and LH SP Johnny"Zombie"Ginn (7-6,3.61,AAA) who has a 5-1 BB/K ratio and still has room to improve giving Omaha a bright future if the team could add another top prospect to grow with these kids..The following players who will not be back next year are up for trade and will be let go for prospects,LF Monty Lynch and 1B LF Jason Wortman.Management would also like to move SP Pat Combs/SP Nick Machiavelli and C Pedro Cruzfor players that are 2-3 years away from the majors to help in the rebuild.(Wortman is a 27 yr old stud will will resign for 1 yr at 2.6 million),Cruz has power in an off year average wise.

ImageArmando Santos Image RF Ad Collins

Bad news as CF Armando Santos will not be returning for another 3 weeks as rehab is not going well."He's only 21, so we will not rush him," Kiggins said.Rookie OF Ad Collins (.235/1/1) hit his first Major League home run on Sunday afternoon June 30th in front of 31,000+ fans including his parents Mr. and Mrs. Tom Collins against the Black Sox!!!!. and SP Arturo Garzo(1-6,4.65) finally won his 1st game of the year!!!!!!

PITCHER OF THE MONTH:
SS Kenji Masaki (.333/1/9/.402 OBP)
When your 11th in the league in hitting sometimes its hard to find someone.

PITCHER OF THE MONTH:
SP Pat Combs(2-0,2.39)
Signed a big contract finally showing what he can do,at least for awhile.(Just in case those looking at SP Vanness,he went 3-0 in June).

MINOR LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH:
SP Mathew Krieger(4-1,2.15) pitches a 2 hit shutout and looks like the real deal as a member of the rotation in a couple of years.
