Mexico City Aztecs Battle for Wildcard Spot Amidst Injuries
Off Topic
Mexico City, Quetzalcoatl Dome — The Mexico City Aztecs find themselves in a fiercely competitive race for a wildcard spot as the season heads into its final stretch. The Aztecs are currently 13 games behind the division-leading Las Vegas Hustlers, so their playoff hopes lie against the other teams vying for a Wildcard slot.
While the Atlantic City Gamblers currently have the #1 Wildcard spot, The Aztecs continue to battle The Rocky Mountain Oysters, Jacksonville Zombies, and Montreal Blazers. The Crawdads, Robins, and Flyers are on the bubble at the moment but still have a shot at a Wildcard themselves.
The Aztecs have been reeling since losing pitcher Vassilis Zorba to a torn rotator cuff back in April. Adding to the team's woes is the injury to left fielder Tian-yun Yeh, who has been sidelined with a hamstring strain. Yeh's speed and defensive ability were crucial to have in the starting lineup. The double blow of losing both Zorba and Yeh has significantly impacted the Aztecs' performance on both offense and defense.
Zorba is eligible to come off the Injured List in 2 weeks, but it is doubtful that he will be ready to contribute much, if any, this season.
With the wildcard race so close, each game from here on out carries immense weight, and the margin for error is razor-thin. Mexico City must find a way to string together victories and limit their mistakes.
The Aztecs have gone 8-4 in their last 12 games and will need to continue playing above .500 ball to find themselves playing meaningful games in October.
Looking ahead, the Aztecs have a 3-game stretch in Calgary against the Pioneers and then head home to host the Austin Shredders.
The Aztecs are 7-0 vs Calgary and 4-2 vs Austin on the season so far.
