That What Cheesehead - 00.10 - Meet Your Draft Picks

While the draft is still ongoing, let's take a quick look at the players the Wolves have selected with their picks thus far...

Shawn McClure
27th pick overall
McClure is a 6 foot, 210 pound right handed swinger that projects to be a potential role or platoon player in the future. He doesn't possess extremely high ratings, but his ratings are terrible either. He's not very quick, not does he possess a very strong work ethic. But he is a team leader, so all isn't lost. He does have one positive quality that General Manager Chris Wilson liked:

"He can play both corner infield spots well" said Wilson. "He is a very strong fielder at both 1b and at 3b. Though listed as a first baseman, he can play third base well. If he can mature and improve as an offensive player, we really like his ability to play defense well."

Felix Ortiz
41st overall
Ortiz is a quick and powerful Panamanian outfielder. At 6 foot, 190 pounds, he looks like a ballplayer. At age 20 however, Ortiz has a long way to go before becoming a big league player.

"Ortiz is 20, but he still plays like a high schooler" said Wilson. "He shows the potential of having some solid power for his size, plus hes fast. Two qualities that we really like in Ortiz. He's a hard worker and can play all three outfield positions well. If he can improve, it wouldn't surprise me if he's in a Wolves uniform in the next 5 to 7 years."

Shannon Hathaway
60th overall
Perhaps Hathaway should have had a nickname. His friends call him beanpole since he's 6 foot 1 inches tall, but only weighs 155 pounds. He has a solid glove over at 3b with solid range and a good arm. He's a very smart, hard-working player with decent speed and the potential to have some homerun power.

"Hathaway must get on a professional weight training regiment" said Wilson. "He's just too small right now to do much damage. But he's a smart, hard working young man. If he gets after it once he arrives with the club, we feel Hathaway could be a fringe player down the road.

Vicente Reyes
74th overall
Reyes becomes the first pitcher selected by the Wolves in the 2000 draft. Reyes is a left handed reliever capable of reaching 95 mph on his fastball. He possesses the potential to throw two above average pitches with a fastball and a slider. He has above average stuff potential with just average control and movement. His biggest asset may be one he'll never get to utilize much... his speed.

"These types of relievers are question marks, as are most players really" said Wilson. "With his potential ratings, he has the potential to be a serviceable end of the bullpen guy. But at the same time, he could flame out and never make it above Double-A. Who in the hell knows. I suppose the worst case scenario with Reyes is that he becomes a pinch runner."
