That's What Cheesehead: 23.05 - Top Hitter (York) Award

Post by 7teen » Fri Sep 11, 2015 8:44 pm

And finally we have reached the final individual award of the season. The Tucker York Award goes to the team's top hitter from the previous season. In case you haven't noticed, and based on the number of views, you haven't, we've developed a trend of mentioning that a lot of our awards could have gone to guys we traded away. And all 3 of the awards we have dished out to this point have gone to players who didn't start the season with the Madison organization. Will that trend end here? Well, it is safe to say that Cam Adams would have likely claimed the York award this season had we not shipped the life-long Wolves catcher to Vancouver at the trade deadline. But even with Adams's departure, the award will go to someone with the club all year. But should we really give out an offensive award considering we didn't have a guy with 70 RBI or 25 homeruns left on our roster? Yes, damnit! Because someone has to win it!!

Look at that baby faced, Alley Pie. Pie had a career year this season, his 5th with the Wolves organization. He played in 161 games this season. Rumors are he slept with another GM's wife or girlfriend and had to miss 1-game this season (anyone still reading this?). He logged a career high 573 at-bats over which he hit .274/.353/.429 with 19 homeruns and 67 RBI. Remember when we said it was a career year for Pie? Yeah, those were all career high numbers. His 157 hits, 73 runs scored, and 3.5 WAR were also career highs.

How did Marcos Limon manage to put up solid stats for the 2nd straight year with shitty ratings? Great question. Who's wife did Pie sleep with? Another great question. Limon led the team in homeruns this season with 23 homeruns despite playing in just 100 games and spending part of the season in Triple-A. In just 342 at-bats, Limon managed to belt those 23 long balls and drive in 63 RBI. He hit .275/.313/.523 over that span and still put up a 2.0 WAR. What in the hell were we thinking benching him when we did? Yeah, his ratings weren't great but the guy kept hitting! Heck, we even opted to keep him around for 2023 rather than release him and eat his final year of contract.

So who is the recipient of the 2022 Tucker York Award? We have to go with Alley Pie. Pie may have finally turned the corner and is ready to become a solid contributor in the lineup. The Wolves will need him to do so in 2023 as the offense doesn't seem to have a lot of firepower heading into next season.
