2061.03 - The Beef Talks with Ert Plabes, Dev Lab director (3/19/61)

A trucker carrying an oversized load (a water silo) from Fresno to Bakersfield listens to a broadcast on WSOS of his second favorite baseball team, the Chicago Black Sox. (This trucker's first favorite is the San Fernando Bears.)

The Black Sox recovered from 3-7 in the first period to 9-11 after the second Spring Training period. Even though the driver likes to say "Spring training numbers don't count" (esp when the numbers suck) he can't help but root for this team to win all the games. He quite likes one of their young pitchers, Carlos Moya. He remembers Moya pitching for the Berkeley Golden Bears many years ago. Moya's pitching was fine then (21 games and 45 innings of relief over 2 years, to the tune of a 1.80 ERA, 0.98 WHIP). Nothing flashy. But one game, a laugher of a win, Moya played catch with a completely bald kid in the stands between innings. Even though playing catch with the kids in the stands was a regular occurrence with all the relievers, this driver thought that was particularly sweet. It's one of those weird memories that stick.
