SOX STAGGER ON
Another week another set of head scratching performances from the Black Sox. Having hit an all time low going 1-9 including being swept 3-0 by fellow strugglers Hawaii., Sox fans looked forward with trepidation to a schedule that saw them face division rivals Phoenix, Madison and Omaha back to back. All three boast winning records and the doomsayers were forecasting, understandably a 0-9 sweep. There was indeed a familiar feel as they went down 1-3 to Phoenix, but then the Sox discovered a little fighting spirit, winning 4 of the next six, splitting the series with Madison and taking 2 from 2 versus the Barnstormers. Not really a cause for jubilation but hopefully something to build on.
The return of 1B Anthony McHugh was a bright spot. McHugh had missed the whole season through injury but in the 9 games since his return is hitting .295/.385/.441 which on this Chicago team are MVP numbers. There was also a welcome return to form for CF Steve Faulkner who celebrated his return from a 6 game suspension with 6 homers and 16 RBI in his last 8 games.
Off the field the news was good with Chicago successfully signing all their draft picks including no 2 Overall SP Clarence Murray who is lining up for the Beloit Blue Sox in AA and has made a respectable start. Sox fans are looking forward to seeing him in a Black Sox uniform and at least having one decent pitcher to root for.
