Sox Scoops 42.004: Black Sox Hire New Manager, Third In As Many Years

Chicago on Thursday introduced its third manager in as many years, welcoming former EBA outfielder Julian Negrete to Black Sox Park for a get-acquainted news conference with local sports reporters.

Negrete, who played four years in Amsterdam and one in Madrid, is just 41 years old and has no professional managerial experience.

“He’s perfect for us,” said Black Sox General Manager Vic Caleca. “At that age, he can’t pull any of that retirement nonsense on us like his two predecessors. And he’s basically a blank slate that we can fill with the baseball magic that is the Blueprint(TM).”

Lucas Cadigon, 61, who managed the Sox in 2041, retired after just one year on the job, citing “philosophical differences” and a fear of insects as his reasons. Cadigan’s predecessor, Bret Richards, 71, managed the Huntsville Phantoms/Chicago Black Sox for three years, but retired after the 2040 season. He, too, cited “philosophical differences” and a distaste for insects.

Negrete is the youngest manager in the BBA, although that could change if any of several teams with managerial openings hire someone even younger.

Although some in the front office wondered about his lack of experience, Caleca waved off those concerns.

“We think his youth is a strength,” Caleca said. “For one thing, we think this will give him an edge in dealing with our players, who aren’t that much younger than Julian. For another thing, he’ll work slightly cheaper.”

Negrete said he’s looking forward to taking the helm in Chicago.

“This is a talented young team, we have a rabid fan base, and we’re already expanding the ballpark,” Negrete said, eyeing a large fruit basket near his lectern. “Plus, it’s no secret that our owner, Vinnie Vitale, loves to congratulate his players with lavish towers of pears. Well, I love pears. This is a match made in heaven!”

I certainly understand why a great of insects would limit a guy's time in Chicago.
