Chicago 1999.11--OH REALLY?

Post by ryankcollins » Sat Mar 05, 2011 9:06 am

The Black Sox went 6-4 and I wanted to share with the MBBA community stats of key players that helped us win:

Image
CF Steve Faulkner #13
I placed Steve in the lineup just to see what he would do; in other words, it was an experiment. Fortunately for me, the experiment was successful. In six games, Steve put up these stats:

27 At-Bats
5 Runs
8 Hits
2 Homeruns
4 RBI's
1 Walk
2 Stolen Bases
.296 AVG

Image
P- MATT DREWS
Matt had another great sim for the Sox. Quite frankly, this guy has been worth the trade, minus one terrible sim...he's been pretty lights out.

1-1 Record
1 Complete Game
2.25 ERA
5 Walks
13 Strikeouts
1.00 WHIP
.196 OAVG
.220 BABIP

...YEAH BABY!

Image
P- NORMAN BAKER
Norman Baker has been tearing up the AAA, so he is another minor league player that I wanted to give a chance to play at the major level. Here's his beautiful numbers:

1-0
2.08 ERA
3 Game appearances
4.3 IP
2 Hits Against
0 Walks
4 Strikeouts
.46 WHIP
.133 OAVG
.182 BABIP

Image
P- WAYNE BRADY
I moved Wayne Brady up from AA for this sim just to see what would happen. This guy was one that I was very hesitant to move because of his shakiness. Well, Wayne Brady proved me wrong and made me look retarded.

3 Game Appearances
4.0 IP
3 Hits Against
0.00 ERA
1 Walk
6 Strikeouts
1.00 WHIP
.200 OAVG

Image
P- LARRY BREW

Larry has seen some good and some bad sims for the Sox. This sim, however, was consistent which is what we truly want and need.

1-0
12.7 Innings Pitched
3.55 ERA
8 Walks
10 Strikeouts
1.66 WHIP
.260 OAVG
.325 BABIP

The walks are high but he got some pretty good offense which is what I've been hoping for all year, but the Sox have been injured often. He also hit .400 AVG while batting, and that was shocking.

Image
P- HOWARD FELDMAN
Howard didn't have an excellent sim, but it wasn't atrocious either. For his first trip to the Majors, I think Feldman performed sufficiently.

5 Game Appearances
6.0 Innings Pitched
1 Save
4.50 ERA
4 Walks
6 Strikeouts

He's a young arm that got the job done in his first sim and performed better than half of the entire pitching staff.

Now, these are all the players that I acquired in giving up Kiplinger. Yes Kiplinger is a good pitcher, but I got a group of good, young players for one good pitcher. I think I walked out of that trade with the upper-hand...maybe not right now (in some people's opinions), but certainly in the future when these kids get some experience under their belt. The new wave of the Black Sox is looking promising.

You know, since you keep poking...

It is my solemn duty to remind you that Brew and Brady were part of the Juan Nieves deal, which I still hold was a good deal for you, and is totally irrelevant when we're talking about Kiplinger.

As for the Kiplinger part...

Jeff Kiplinger.

Let me know when one of the players in this deal performs near the level of Kiplinger.

I have to admit, Drews has been, ahem, (insert your own adjective synonymous with shockingly here) good. As for the last sim, you played Louisville, Omaha and Phoenix...so let's not put Faulkner or Baker in the Hall of Fame just yet.

I'm not dismissing the fact that Kiplinger is great, but he is only great every 5th start whereas I got a young starter who is good every 5th start (not quite Kiplinger, but still) plus four other players that can be utilized on an everyday or every other day basis. I don't see how anyone can justify that trade being a terrible one unless you're strictly a division rival of the team getting Kiplinger.

You know, if I had the opinion that Marquette gave up a lot in the deal, then I should be cheering you on for having done what you did because you just absolutely gutted the Marquette franchise. I should therefore be thrilled, overjoyed beyond belief. So, my apologies. I've just built a golden calf in my backyard and I'm sacrificing a goat as we speak. The celebratory feast is at 6 PM.

Seriously - if you'd stop calling me out, I'd stop telling you what I think of your deal. So stop it.

By the way, let's break down for a second the data you're arguing.

Brew and Brady were part of the Nieves deal (fact).

Drews has been surprisingly very good; let's get real, you didn't expect an ERA of 3.95, right? If he does this every year, I AM an idiot and you DID make a very good deal. It's worth mentioning that Drews' 3.95 ERA is just a 107 OPS+, which is obviously good but probably isn't a full standard deviation above league average.

And you did just play Phoenix, Louisville and Omaha, so I said you shouldn't start qualifying your trade based on what these guys do against the three worst teams in the JL, which I would say to anyone who was justifying anything based on what they'd done against Phoenix, Louisville and Omaha, unless they consistently lost to them, in which case they may BE Phoenix, Louisville and Omaha. :)

Since you seem to be pretty proud, though, I think it's worth mentioning that Faulkner homered off of David Klopp, however. That's an impressive feat even if Klopp has given up 22 this year.

(The other was off Candy Kanaio, which isn't. :))

((PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT))

I think this thread is solid proof that if you have an issue with a deal, there are good ways to go about stating so, and bad ways. We've learned this during the year.

We've also learned that talent evaluation is not an exact science. EVERYONE EVALUATES TALENT DIFFERENTLY. ((Cough cough))

So if we want to critique a trade I think we should have a right to do so, but let's do it in the spirit of good fun, sportsmanship, and keep in mind folks this is a FRIGGIN computer baseball league, not LIFE AND DEATH!!

He seriously didn't have to go back to the division rival thing though - I'm still dumbfounded on how he thinks that's my motivation. I guess we agree to disagree, which means that I'm gonna always think he was wrong, and he's going to always think that it had something to do with the fact that he did this deal with Marquette and not Baltimore.

So he should stop calling out people who criticized the trade, and I should not talk about it at all until someone does.

I can live with that.

By the way, when the hell did Brad Browne anoint himself the voice of reason? :)
