The Black Sox 2017.1 - Random Observations

Post by KCCardinalFan » Tue Oct 21, 2014 10:46 am

It’s always a challenge to figure out the intricacies of a new league, just on a surface level I’m coming from a league that uses the 1-20 scale for talents/ratings so just adjusting my expectations for development, etc. will take some time. But even without game access I thought it would be interesting to jump into the HTML and try to make some observations about the team I am inheriting.

Observation #1 – 7th in the JL in Starters ERA is pretty damn mediocre, but they have been playing with one of the worst defenses in the league behind them. A BABIP of .311 is just awful and so time to dig a little deeper. Tim Parsons at Third? Yuck. He should hit for average, might have a little pop, but he is either a First Baseman or a DH and he probably doesn’t have the bat for either spot. Uno might have the bat for First but sure as hell shouldn’t be playing there, he is a DH all the way. I really do like him though. Lancaster and Anderson probably need to be flip-flopped, and the Outfield is pretty solid for the most part. We are past the deadline, but fortunately most of these are fixes that can happen in-house. My pitchers are going to love me.

Observation #2 – This lineup really needs to be reworked. I hate Lancaster and Lindsey hitting at the top of this lineup with their respective .617 and .684 OPS. I like both Lavigne and Goodwin hitting towards the top, if only they weren’t base-clogging plodders. I guess this will be more of an off-season fix, but we don’t have much ability to get on-base plus we don’t have much speed…which would be ok if we were a slugging team but we’re not really that either. I guess this is the long way of saying this team doesn’t seem to have an identity or philosophy at the plate, which can happen when you have high GM turnover. So we need to start moving one way, or the other, while also keeping a decent defense intact. Easier said than done for sure. :)

You're taking over the last gasps of a dynasty. You could be doing a lot worse; the farm isn't half bad.

Absolutely, and some very tradeable assets in the big leagues. We are past the deadline though, so this is one of those can we tweak enough things to stay in contention before the real work begins in the offseason? I'm not sure, but at least it will be fun.
