2018.1 - Draft Review

Post by recchem2000 » Fri Nov 21, 2014 3:53 pm

My first draft in the Brewster. Just joining and being thrown into the fire. Here's how it went (the more I reflect on it, it didn't go well)

1st round, 18th overall - CF Thomas Phillips - Hit .406 in his 2 seasons at Kodak College. Showed very little power in college, as he only collected 26 EBH in his 2 seasons. We liked his speed although he didn't show much of it last year only stealing 8 bases. The 21 year old can definitely hit for average but needs to improve on his defense in the OF. A very high work ethic helps, we hope. You'll see a tendency here as the new management likes guys with high work ethic.

1st round, 27th overall - SP Rob Miller - Might have been asleep at the wheel with this pick. His ratings are ok (7/6/7). But the 21 year old only pitched in 2 games in 2017. The year before he was and unspectacular 3-4 with a 5.36 ERA with Apple College. What did we like about this kid? Well, he's got the potential to have 3 plus pitches. He's smart and works hard. We'll see if this pick pans out down the road.

1st round, 40th overall - LF Jorge Lopez - At this round in the draft, we needed to find a power bat. Jorge was the best out there in our opinion. The 21 year old hit 23 HR's in just 187 AB's at Office Depot College. He also managed to hit for average (.369) something he had not been able to do the prior 2 seasons in college. We're hoping the light went off for this kid in 2017 and it continues during his pro career. Another High work ethic guy but he needs to improve defensively or he could have DH written all over him.

2nd round, 64th overall - RF Lucio Ortiz - We hit up the High School ranks for this pick. Lucio is similar to 1st round pick Lopez. Plus power but average in most other things. He killed it his Junior year in HS, hitting .455 with 6 HR's and 33 RBI's. He must of got a girl friend his senior year because his numbers suffered! Ortiz hit just .288 with 2 HR's and 19 RBI's. Luckily we only drafted him and not his girlfriend!

The rest of my picks were mostly auto picks as I just ran out of time to look at the draft. Hell, I don't even think I had a chance to look at any of these guys in game. I'll be better prepared in the future for these drafts! Here's to hoping one of these guys makes it to the Windy City!

Based on what I've seen from other players, I feel like Phillips isn't going to develop 100%, but he'll be right on the edge of usable. I like him; I'd take him, and he's a good pick at #18 in this draft.
