2061.08 - Letter From Dave Mathes (1st round draft pick 2061) to an unnamed cousin

Cousin,

Well I am sure you heard the news but I got drafted in the first round by the Black Sox. It was not my top choice but I'll make the most of it. Big city here I come! Negotiations, though, are going to be extremely hard. I am flattered that they took me over Vicente Liriano, who got picked by Omaha immediately after me. Also a little worried about that weird little chatter about "third base."

See, Chicago had went with pitching in their first rounds in their last three drafts: Orlando Peña, Orlando Rúbio, and Dhrtatman Seshadri. But once LLarry Jensen, Jesús Gil, and Javier Martínez went, there was a huge drop in pitching this draft. The Stool is in a tier by himself. The Robins got him. He went 2nd overall. So when those guys went - and when Jesús Durango went 3rd (!) I figured "Uh oh, I better start paying attention." Word had it that Chicago was looking for a third basemen and all of sudden I thought "Would they think that I would take reps at third?" Then I thought, "Have they seen me play third?!?" Is the one game I played in 2060 going to haunt me? Yeah, it was fun but it was just a lark.

Playing third never came up when I met with the Rock. He did tout my "adaptability" to the trainer (Padmesh) but I thought nothing of it. Or at the very least, if they're talking adaptability they must be wanting me to play center. Which I'll do for sure but whatever it was, adaptability was certainly a selling point.

But boy, I hope they don't place me at third! I gotta kill it at LF in the Complex. K-Toy already made a card! It's pure ruckus but there it is.

Notes:

Dave Matthes started exactly 1 game at third for 3M. He made 1 putout and had 1 assist.

The Black Sox are 17-23 and 8 games behind the Omaha Cyclones. They are tied with two other teams (the Calgary Pioneers and the Vancouver Mounties) for the poorest away record at 4-15.
