Bobby Beat 2007 v2: Bobs' R1 Pick was made with DH in Mind

Holding the #11 pick in this past June's draft, the Bobwhites were looking for a hitter, as usual. Left handed hitting Bob Ritchie, a 22 year old college senior, was still on the board, even though he projects to be a run producing machine with a good eye at the plate. The catch? Just that: he can't. With a rating at 1b of 2 that does not look to get much better, Ritchie is a born DH, being drafted into a league where a DH doesn't exist.

GM Marko explained. "We knew he didn't project well with the glove, but that bat is too good to pass up. This guy will be the next Neil McKinney, and we all know how awesome he was in his prime," the GM said. "We figured there was a DH in the minors, and we would just cross our fingers that the big leagues would go for it before too long. We were thrilled when the league voted for the DH only a few months later."

So, as a new era unfolds for the MBWBA, let the record show that the first great Designated Hitter in league history was drafted before the rule even existed. Bob Ritchie really will be that good!
