Washington, DC--
Continuing their tradition of locking up young stars such as Jim Wilson and Darius Campbell, Jr. last year, the Washington Bobwhites inked two home grown players to frugal contracts, buying out both players' final three arbitration seasons in the process.
In the 2001 draft, two pure closer prospects were taken very early. Louisville selected Nate Campbell at #3, frustrating team officials who wanted him to fall to the Bobs at #6. Determined to draft a closer anyway, the Bobs took sinkerballer Chad Jordan. Now, over half a decade later, one of these pitchers is struggling to find his way, while the other just recorded a tremendous breakout season.
At one point, Campbell looked like a sure fire star. But in 2007 it was Jordan who put up these numbers: 4-3 with 37 saves and a 1.68 ERA, and 58 hits in 80 innings. He was also 3rd on the club with 108 strikeouts. This performance spurred the team to discuss a long term deal with the 26 year old star, and they agreed to a 6 year, 22 million dollar extension.
The other young player isn't a star just yet, and he certainly wasn't a hyped prospect. In fact, Doug Byrd wasn't even drafted, signing with the Bobs in 1997 as a minor league free agent. Ten years later the catcher had a breakout season, recording a .324 average with 25 homers and 89 RBI in 2006. And though he was slowed by a mideason injury this past season, the club still saw fit to offer him a 5 year, 13 million dollar extension.
Now if only the Bobs could develop some starting pitching!

Jordan and Byrd are both great stories. (Especially against the backdrop of Campbell).
So, it took only how many years for Byrd to have a breakout season?

Nate Campbell http://baseballretrospective.com/MBBA/O ... _8284.html says control is overrated; http://baseballretrospective.com/MBBA/O ... _8807.html Jordan has done very well
Looks like maybe campbell was brought up to early? Hard to say why his development stalled
