Bobby Beat 2005 v7: Poper Injured, Burgundy Returns, R1 Pick

Post by jiminyhopkins » Sat May 26, 2012 12:30 am

Washington, DC--

It was a sim of good news and bad news for the Bobwhites, who went 4-6 during the ten game set but are still only 3 games back of the JL Atlantic Division lead. Besides the usual boring stuff (another Player of the Week award for Jim Wilson, for instance... *yawn*), here are three more news items Bobwhite fans have been following this week:

Lamont Poper Injured
Bobwhite shortstop Lamont Poper was on his way to one of the finest seasons of his career. Oh, he's just a .220 hitter you say? How about on pace for a 30 homer/40 stolen base season with an .870 OPS, we say. Lamont's unfortunate injury was a broken hand suffered in June 14th's game versus California. Poper looks to miss significant time with this injury, perhaps being out until September. Infield whiz (and no stick) Nasir Jones has been playing shortstop in his absence.

Ron Burgundy is....... wait for it......... Kind of a Big Deal!
Washington fans were frustrated once again this past April as Burgundy went down with yet another early season injury. After a rehab assignment in AAA, the 35 year old righthander has been lights-out in the four starts since his return at the beginning of June. So far this month he is 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA in 28 innings, providing a definite boost to a suddenly legit Washington rotation.

2005 1st Round pick Monty Cunningham
By the time the 7th overall pick came around, most of the impact players had gone in the eyes of Bobwhite scouts. So, the decision was made to draft based on two factors: signability and proximity to the major leagues. Cunningham was chosen for his advanced development, and the fact that he should be able to sign for as little as a few hundred thousand dollars. Cunningham is an average right fielder with a power bat and decent speed, whom scouts say could be in the big leagues as early as next spring.
