Lagerweij was born in Aruba and his mother tragically died during birth. His father, Christofer, worked on the island’s oil refinery for several years while raising young Jaak by himself. Christofer, a former collegiate baseball player, taught Jaak baseball at an early age and sacrificed his sleep to trach his son the game he loved. Jaak hit a growth spurt when he turned 12 and began throwing 75 MPH at an early age. He had expected to sign as an international free agent in January of 2056, but with international free agency closed that season, he was forced into the amateur draft and selected 27th overall by Nashville.
In 14 starts in rookie ball in 2056, Lagerweij had a 3.55 ERA with four decent pitches in his repertoire, but they all need tuning. Still, he sits in the mid-90’s with his fastball and is able to keep the ball on the ground. With a few years of coaching, Lagerweij should be a viable BBA option.
