The Louisville Sluggers announced their third pick of the 2009 amateur draft today, number 58 overall, Josa Pena from the McDonald's Hamburglers of the national high school league. Pena was an all-high school all-star as a 15 year-old sophmore in 2006, lost most of 2007 due to injury, and split his time between first base and designated hitter in 2008 for McDonald's.
"We've been watching Pena for a while,"GM Hopkins confirmed,"We love his plus power and plus contact potential. We feel he has the tools to play third base, and we will be introducing him to the position in Rookie Ball this summer."
Jose Pena seems to have a limitless talent ceiling, but the 18 year-old is currently a big (6'4") rawboned (one's across the current talent ratings) kid. Whether Pena can make the jump from having potential to achieving greatness, is up to him. The process will likely be a long one, however.
Take a deep breath, Slugger fans, we likely won't be seeing this one in the Show for a long while. That's okay though, Fungo Clark won't need a replacement for a while yet.
