Upon looking at his inherited roster, new Greenville general manager Levi Chronister saw what he thought was a glaring hole in the team's ability to get on base. The Moonshiners finished seventh last year in the Johnson League with a .336 OBP, helping lead the team to just 804 runs (fifth in the league), despite finishing first in the league in strikeouts (1,100), second in stolen bases (150) and fourth in slugging (.441).
So, hoping to find a spark plug to pair atop the lineup with CF Aaron Hayes, the Moonshiners made their first trade under Chronister, sending two prospects to Las Vegas for infielder Earl Alleyne.
The 26-year-old is a hard worker with who can put the bat on the ball (18 contact) and has a great eye at the plate (18 eye, 17 avoid K's). He hit .263/.351/.374 in 198 at-bats with the Hustlers, collecting 24 walks to just 18 strikeouts. Alleyne can play first base, second base and both corner outfield spots and likely will play first base for the Moonshiners. He's a bit of a slug on the basepaths, but if he bats second behind Hayes and in front of the team's sluggers, he shouldn't need to run that fast to score on all those doubles and homers from the three, four and five spots in the lineup.
In return for Alleyne, the Moonshiners gave up 3B prospect Silvio Garcia, SP prospect Carlos Medina and $1.5 million in cash. Garcia is a solid prospect at the plate (7/7/5/8/7 talents, 19 steal, 16 baserunning), but is blocked in the pipeline to the majors by Roman Empire. Medina is ranked as Greenville's No. 5 prospect with 6/7/6 talents and 18 stamina. However, his flyball tendencies (39% groundball percentage) and low work ethic made him expendable in the eyes of the Moonshiners' front office.

Digging that trade; I don't think Medina is worth anything, and that other guy was way down the future depth chart. I think I had some lineup inefficiencies that cost us some OBP, though adding a guy like this to hit #2 in the lineup is certainly interesting. He should replace McNiven nicely, though, and with Ray and Manville in the middle, you could see an ass-load of runs 1 through 4.

As I told you, Levi, loved the acquistion of Alleyne. He's not the typical power-hitting 1B, but he fits what you needed in a big way.
