The Jacksonville Hurricanes, after firing their headline writer for whatever that was, indeed overcame a rash of injuries to key players recently to play some of their more inspired baseball in the 2057 season. The Hurricanes have posted back-to-back winning sims against some of the more impressive opponents in the Johnson League while missing #3 and #4 hitters Daniel Pepper and Donald Miller, and one begins to wonder what the upper limit is for this team in 2057.
"We've been very resilient despite a lot of very surprising setbacks," said Jacksonville manager Farri Agymah. "The guys have really stepped up for us."
In the last two weeks, Jacksonville has gone 8-5, including series wins against the Rocky Mountain Oysters and the Montreal Blazers; Montreal had lost just two series all year before falling to the Hurricanes. Jacksonville is third in runs allowed and tied for fourth in runs scored, and they've been doing it without some of their more important players.
"We have a lot of pride here," said current cleanup hitter Pedro Hozven, whose 16 homers this season is within the top ten in the JL. "We weren't just going to roll over just because we were down a couple guys."
The pitching staff this year has been very strong, led by May Pitcher of the Month Juan Marroquin but strong throughout. Mark Thomas has been his usual self since returning to the staff, Bob Anderson still projects as a #1 starter and just picked up a knuckle curve for fun, and the whole staff has been solid. The staff has held so firm that they're still first in bullpen ERA without stopper Hayden Bennion.
"We're a complete team, so knock down one part and there's still plenty there," said Anderson. "That's how we see our rotation - we're a total unit."
Jacksonville is currently 34-23, on a 95-win pace and solidly in a wild card position earlier than many years. Upcoming is a big road series against Las Vegas, who is the stalking horse in the wild card race.
