Moonshiners Monitor, Vol. 1.29: August Recap

Post by lchronister » Mon Nov 01, 2010 10:10 pm

After a bad July, the Moonshiners rebounded to perform slightly better in August, again losing 15 games but winning 13 instead of 11.

Even with that, Greenville began the month 5.5 games out of first and finished August 8 games behind Baltimore, while also losing 2.5 games in the standings to third-place Louisville. The only thing that really helped was taking three straight games from the Monarchs at the end of the month and taking splitting a four-game series against the Cardinals at the beginning of August. A couple of those wins were thanks to the arm of Hipolito Pichardo, who threw a three-hit, 1-0 shutout against Louisville on August 4 and a two-hit, 4-0 shutout against Baltimore on August 30.

Despite the losing record and losing grip in the race for the Atlantic, the Moonshiners did have some other solid individual performances:

Top Hitting Games
-- 1B Earl Alleyne went 4-for-4 in a 6-1 win over Washington.

-- OF Dan Manville went 4-for-4 with 4 RBI and 3 runs in a 19-10 win against California.

-- Manville, Reddie Ray and Jake Urban (twice) had 2-HR games, including an 11-6 win over Baltimore on August 29 that featured two homers by both Manville and Urban.

Top Pitching Game
-- Pichardo would have had the top outing of the sim if not for Jay Lee's no-hitter against Vancouver on August 11. Lee struck out 11 batters and walked just one. Of course, he followed it up with an injury in his next start, missing three weeks.

Good to see Hipolito is having another good year. That guy is nothing extraordinary, but he pitches so well.

Yeah, I've been very pleased with him, especially at the bargain price I have him for next year.

I need to take a closer look at his numbers and see if maybe he should be pulled from games sooner. I wonder if his stamina is what keeps him around in games he might be getting knocked around in late.
