Monarchs dispose of Mounties in Six Game Series

In the opening round Cartwright Series the Baltimore Monarchs (87-75, 1st JL Atlantic) took on the Vancouver Mounties (104-58, 1st JL Pacific). It was a tough matchup as the Mounties posted the best record in the league and featured the top offense in the JL this year.

Game 1 –
Gary Jones may have pitched one too many innings as a Daniel Labrie RBI single in the top of the 8th inning was the winning run. Reliever Roy Kitt got the win and Enrique Reyna the save.

Game 2 –
Robbie Sargent dominated in a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts. Juan Rivera was shaky for Baltimore giving up 7 walks.

Game 3 –
Playoff baseball at its finest in this one as a Doug Newhouse blast with two outs in the top of the eleventh was the difference. Baltimore scattered 13 hits and 10 walks over 11 innings but only managed two runs to go down in the series 2-1.

Game 4 –
Vancouver rallied in the top of the ninth off Baltimore closer Enrique Reyna to take a one run lead and looking at a commanding 3-1 series lead only to have the Monarchs tie the game in the bottom of the ninth on a Daniel Labrie RBI single. A Mike Roberts single in the bottom of the eleventh drove home Juan Lopez and the series was tied at 2.

Game 5 –
James Endres struck out 10 in 7 plus innings and allowed 1 run as the Monarchs won 6-1 and took a 3-2 series lead.

Game 6 –
The wheels came off for Robbie Sargent and the Mounties as a three run Stephen Lubin home run in the seventh inning was the big blow in a 6-3 Monarchs win. Juan Rivera bounced back with a solid outing giving up 3 earned runs over 8 innings of work.
