Baltimore Draft Notes

Here is the much delayed Baltimore Monarchs Draft Report

First Round – SP Richard Phillips – 19th Overall

The lefty hurler relies is known for his control. He has three good enough pitches and projects to be a decent three or four starter on most teams. Phillips is an advanced prospect and has started his professional career with a 3-0 record and 0.95 ERA in four starts at AAA Washington. Phillips won’t see time in the bigs this year but could be a factor in the spring of 2010.

Second Round – IF Mike Sims – 46th Overall

For some reason the ‘star’ ratings really like Sims so I felt obligated to take him as a value pick in the second round. His lefty bat will help his average batting skills. He is also an average fielder and probably a good option at second but could be a decent part timer at third. Sims features blazing speed and will be a threat on the base paths. Sims started his career at Rookie League Hagerstown.

Third Round – OF Fred Fullerton– 76th Overall

After missing out on Jose Cruz in the first round (went one spot ahead to Phoenix) the Monarchs selected the poor man’s version of Cruz in the third. Fullerton is advanced and will start in AAA Washington. He has good enough defense for all outfield positions and has a strong left batting split. I’m optimistic that Fullerton can develop into a decent platoon starter if his batting splits develop against right handed pitching.

Notes:

I was really happy to get Juan Trevino in the fourth round. If he adds some velocity as he gets older his pitches will improve and his stuff will get better along with it. At the very least he projects to be a good reliever. At best he could become a solid three starter.
