There's a certain magic in being terrible. It's not a good magic, per se. But it's entertaining (to some, anyway).
"You know those old shows where the powers-that-be are going to execute some poor dude and he's being pulled to the gallows by a rope around his neck and the crowd is just hurling things at him -- rotten vegetables, rocks, insults, you name it?" Former first-rounder and current Robin's first baseman Frank Liyongo said outside the team locker room after his team's second straight 4-3 loss to the Crawdads of New Orleans. "That's this team right now. Except it seems like we’ll never make it to the gallows, which would just be a mercy at this point. It's just been one long slog through the mud and muck while getting pelted by shit."
The two losses to New Orleans drop Cobble Hills record to a league worst 9-23, resulting in a bit of contention amongst Robins players and the new general managing of Shoeless.
"Pretty easy to understand why you'd always see those #FireShoeless signs at every Mad Popes game over the last two decades," said BBA veteran Leon Ludeman. "I'm the only guy on the team he brought in who's any good. I don't even care to know who any of the guys are who put on the same ugly jersey as I do. To me, they're all just a bunch of no-name, aging roster-fillers for a forgotten short-season A team. It's pathetic. Bunch of losers."
It's hard to argue with Ludeman's assessment when the outcomes on the field are what they are. But Shoeless is no stranger to dealing with some downturns as he experienced it in Sacramento during the mid-40's as the team went through a mini-retooling, resulting in a a Brewster Championship in 2053, something he'd like to copy here in Cobble Hill.
When asked about Liyongo and Ludeman's comments, Shoeless had this to say:
"I don't make statements regarding players no longer in my organization."
(EDITOR'S NOTE: As of publication, Liyongo and Ludeman were on waivers. It seems Shoeless has no intention of bringing them back.)
