Brooklyn State of Mind: Do The Robins Have An In House Middle Infield Solution Already? (2062.9)

It is no secret that the Robins are going to need to improve their defense in particular up the middle. Despite Francisco Garcia being expected to have an above average defensive metric season, it turns out that his ZR would go from a 6 to -14. That has to be a record, and given that his hitting has never been a calling card that means it is likely that Garcia is gone after his contract expires at the end of the month. Thus, the Robins are likely going to be in search of someone else to play up the middle.

If you take a look at the Robins prospect pool, it is no secret that the team is very pitching heavy in recent years. But one potential option that exists for the Robins is AA INF Carlos Colon. The 22 year old ended up making the AA All Star team and won the game MVP honors. With a 3 WAR season, he is going to get a look at the Bay Area next year. While he can play up the middle, there is a strong possibility that he is going to get the chance to go to the Robins dev lab to work on fielding at either 2B or a shortstop. If Colon can have a good spring and start to AAA ball, he would have a chance. But it would be likely that the Robins look to invest some resources into the middle infield to improve the defense behind the pitching.

Garcia is 37 and looks like he took many defensive lumps this season.

Colon is gonna need a lot of work just to play 2B.

Colon is a 1B/DH in my eye. I wouldn't put any faith in him improving enough to play a passable second base. His bat will play and I like his AvK.

At short, I would find a glove 1st guy and whatever offense he gives will be a plus.

You should make a trade with Madison. They have an excess of great fielders and you have an excess of great hitters. There has to be a deal there that would work out well for both teams.
