Class of '25
The top five picks in the 2025 first year players draft were …
1.SP Dave Poole – A 21 year old pitcher who has completed high school and two years of college thanks to not signing with Carolina after they drafted him in the 2021 draft. He has three well developed pitches but needs to sharpen his control and get more movement on his pitches too
2.MR Sergio Perez – 21-yr-old Sergio left college with a career record of 10-6 with 29 saves and a 4.11 ERA in 68 outings. His K/9 often touches 10 or more but he will have to work on his BB/9 which is usually three or over
3. SP Millard Martinez – Another HS & Coll pitcher, 23-yr-old Millard went undrafted in 2019 and becomes Brooklyn's latest project. With a career ERA over five and a BB/9 around three he has a lot of work to do with a WHIP around 2.00 as well.
4.2B Alex Speranza – 21-yr-old Alex is a sure handed second baseman who can hit over .260 and is patient enough to draw quite a few walks.
5.1B Nick Hunter – 21-yr-old Nick is the third example of Robins picking a player who's in his second draft. Nick failed to sign with Halifax after being drafted in the 8th round of the 2021 draft. Despite only playing 40-50 games a year in his five educational seasons he has hit double figure homers three times and has drawn 138 walks in his 224 Col/HS games.
Catching up with the Class of '24
GM Laverick's first draft class is doing all right for its self. #1 pick, RF Chris Sweet, is currently making his debut at Double-A Memphis after splitting his first pro year between Lexington & Newark. In 81 games between the two levels he hit over .300 in both levels and is managing .268 in AA. He has three homers this season, one away from tying his pro career high. Second rounder, Ron Rodriguez, was promoted to A ball after a good start but struggled a bit and was returned to Lexington. He finished with a 7-2, 2.74 record in 15 rookie starts and a 0-1, 6.55 record in two A ball starts. A good showing in winter ball (4-1, 2.83 in 8 starts) saw him start his second year in Newark where he is 4-1 in his first nine starts. Salvador Gallegos hit .294 in his first year at Lexington but has struggled in Newark this year. Third baseman Nathan Perales got an early injury call up to Newark but struggled to adapt to A ball so early in his pro career but this year is improving hitting .257 with some sure handed defence at the hot corner after honing his skills at George Town in winter ball. Fifth round pick Heath Delgado struggled in his first pro year but hit .397 in winter ball. Injuries saw him get an early promotion from Newark to Memphis where he has settle in a bit upping his average to .239 but he still needs to work on his defence if he wants to progress.
