Baltimore Bulletin 2013-3 Trade #2

Monarchs Trade for Riviere and Huigens

Baltimore and Montreal traded a handful of young players today as the Monarchs sent Mal Banks and prospect Ace Young to the Blazers for pitcher Martin Huigens and infielder Yves Riviere.

Martin Huigens is a 26 year old innings eating starter who has demonstared that he is solid big leaguye starter. I was looking to add depth to the rotation and Huigens is a solid middle of the rotation pitcher who at 26 years old still has his best years ahead of him.

Riviere is a good on base guy and can play a number of infield positions. His value is clearly in his abilitiy to get on base. Rivierre is 27 and also should be enterring the prime of his career. I was trying to add a good infielder for a playoff run and Riviere fits the bill.

Mal Banks was a highly developed darft pick from 2012. He is an interesting player and tough to let go of. Ace Young projects to be a middle of the rotation guy and is fairly developed at 19. We liked the trade because it gave us two solid contributors for this season while only giving up one. Young is a nice prospect to even up the trade. Free agency is a tough place to add long term pieces so I thought that the extra money I'm paying the arb eligible players was probably a better use than overpaying a veteran in December.

I like Riviere. Even inquired about trading for him but couldn't work anything out.
