Brooklyn State of Mind: Late Night At Denny's (2060.8)
It was around 3 in the morning Mountain Time when a lone visitor walked into a Denny's located near the home of the Phoenix Talons. He seated himself down, and looked at the menu. After a few minutes, his Grand Slam was brought to him, and he ate. The waitress noted that he looked familiar and asked the man if he was either a Talon or a Robin executive.
"I get told that I look like the Robins GM all the time. But Ben and I are nowhere alike. I'm just a traveler who was at the game tonight." The waitress responded, "Of course, It's been a slow night here. I saw on my break that the Robins ended up winning. My, they have been off to a good start. I bet that GM would be relieved. It's been over a decade since the Robins last made the playoffs, and I gotta say that the team looks good."
The man nodded as he finished his pancakes. "True. Brooklyn has been one of the surprise teams along with Jacksonville. Of course, nobody is surprised since Jacksonville hired a proven winner while Brooklyn kept that GM who traded all of his prospects too early back in the day. Despite having that super shortstop in the draft, he will get traded for pennies on the dollar to Nashville or Sacramento. Mark my words."
The waitress nodded, and walked away. There was something familiar about him, but she had to check on another order. After a few minutes, she returned to the man's table. "But the standings don't lie. It has been over a quarter of a season. And it's not like the Robins GM can bask in his minor league success." A bunch of Toledo Liberty merchandise was hanging up on the walls, along with Tokyo Pearls pictures. The man looked at the pictures, and ate his eggs. "Look, all we can hope is that the Robins have learned their lessons. Cano was a risky trade, but it turns out that him carrying the offense by himself hasn't come true. And if the defense can get better, than who knows. The games against the Frontier teams are going to show us a lot about how real this Robins team is."
The man finished his meal, and paid at the cash register. As he walked out and got into his car, the waitress realized who he was. It was Robins Chief Baseball Officer Ben Heuring. She went to his table to get the plates, and saw a note on the back of his receipt with the 20% tip. "Thanks for the conversation."
While that was happening, the Robins Chief Baseball Executive was driving back to the hotel for some sleep before he flew to Boise. He knew that his team has hung in there. But if they should buy or not would be determined by what happened. And he was glad to have finally tried a Denny's to see what The Reclusive GM might do. If that meant something, time would only tell.

Are you sure the waitress wasn't moonlighting from her day job with the Talons security team?!

I dated a girl a long time ago. She was vegetarian and I figured it was wrong to eat meat in front of her, so our relationship revolved around Denny's who had a very good boca burger... That didn't last long.

Great little story, Ben. Really enjoyed reading it.
I am so happy things might be coming together for you at last. I'd hoped for similar this year but we just stink. Still not sure what the secret is to getting better but it looks like you're finding it.

Thanks, Rob. Frankly I'm not a playoff team at this stage, and still am going to need some better fielding and better starters. If I can get 60+ wins, that is an improvement I will take.

I think we didn't want to be a couple that goes to Denny's all the time.Trebro wrote: ↑Tue Aug 27, 2024 9:31 pmDenny's took it off the menu?cheekimonk wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2024 2:35 amI dated a girl a long time ago.
