ootp's r5d implementation sorta sucks (like Spring Training which doesn't allow non-roster invitees).
first off, there is no financial implication (in real life a draftee costs his team $50K paid to his old team).
there is no tracking of r5draftees in ootp.
in real life, contrary to popular opinion, any r5draftee can be released at any time (after offering him back to his old team for $25K).
ootp does nothing to require this.
what CANNOT be done in real life is optioning or otherwise sending the r5draftee to the minors (he stays on the ML roster or gets released).
if he lasts the year on the ML roster, then he can be optioned or sent to the minors.
ootp (to the best of my knowledge) does nothing to prevent you from optioning him to the minors (either before or after waivers) at any time (thereby creating a policing problem for commissioners).
very few r5draftees in real life last on their new ML team for the year.
in real life the r5d works reasonably well.
in ootp, it sucks.
