2061 How Do You Slot Your Draft Picks?

Post by Trebro » Fri Jan 03, 2025 3:43 pm

The philosophical disagreement in Phoenix has me thinking: Generally speaking, how do you assign your initial level for players you draft?

Depends on their ratings. I agree with Matt that a 35 OVR would have started in SA for me, even if they’re 18 years old. My top pick this year, Harrison Dundon, is 19 and also a 35 OVR. He started in SA then went to A because he was producing.

A few teams got 45-50 OVR picks this year. Those would start in AA for me.

Nothing wrong with Sean’s approach, either. 18 is awful young. Nothing wrong with commish’s post either. No reason for the drama.

My apologies for omitting a goat entrails option.

I agree that there's no set approach, which had me curious what the league does as a general rule. I'm still pretty solid on the idea that I don't want an 18 year old to struggle too far up the ladder. But until this season I was also locked into the one level per year approach so I'm always open to ideas abd perspectives.

If an 18 year old 1st pick was a 60 OVR would you still send them to rookie ball? There's a breakeven point. 30 OVR players generally destroy A ball so that's roughly where I consider them ready to go up a level.

In fact, as a general rule this is the baseline OVR rating by level to succeed (warning, huge rule of thumb here).

R - 25 OVR (international complex, high school draft picks)
SA - 25 OVR (college draft picks, players who already succeeded in R ball)
A - 30 OVR
AA - 35 OVR
AAA - 40 OVR

A lot of it comes down to whatever there starting ratings are, case in point Royce Hinkle. Would’ve been a waste of time to have him in Rookie Ball.

Depends on his age and stats, mostly. I take ratings into less consideration.

I might start a little conservative and try not to place them too high too fast. If they perform (stats), they get promoted. I moved a OA: 40 POT: 45 guy from A to AA to AAA this season. He is about ready for the majors. 2B Jesús Rosito, 2060 first-year player draft (Round 1, Pick 17, 17th overall pick).

I always start where their current overall stands and let them sit at their level for a season. Once they' put up the stats for a season, that's when it's time for a promotion. I used to promote by sample sizes with plate appearances/innings pitched but it wasn't consistent.

However, some prospects are just so good they're ready to skip levels in the minors. Not necessarily ready to be fast tracked to the bigs, but I'll let them finish the season in the minors and bring them up opening day.
