The draft corresponds with setting the short season minor league rosters and taking first assessment of what you built in the offseason. May is the best month both in-game and real life.

Interesting question. I said off-season, but it's not really for dealing and signing players so much as it is assessing and rearranging the minors. Looking at development and progress, and determining who should play where. Then spring training is always interesting to watch.

Late in the season I usually make 10-15 shortlists in game to plan for next season. The lists are usually something like this.

-Potential Roster (big list of any player in my org who is capable of playing in BBA that year
-Probably Roster(smaller list of my realistic projected roster to find holes)
-taxi squad(list of players with options, not likely to make team)
-non tender candidates (our of option, easily replaceable player to save a buck)
-rule 5 protect( all my rule 5 elig players, later shortened to ones I don't want to lose)
-Rule 5 targets
-FA targets
-Option Able FA targets
-trade targets
-IFA targets
-D-lab(players who I want to work on something)
-future team(big list of all players 26 and under who I think may possibly play in BBA at some point.)
-Possible Team(probable team with top FA,trade,Rule 5 targets added)

I'm sure I'm missing a few. It's great to get this done before the season ends. Once the lists are made is when the fun begins. Every list has its own function but I also cross reference. Maybe I don't need Free Agent A if I think I can get a similar player in Rule 5.

Possible Team list is where I can really find out how good we can be. 2052 was probably my greatest off-season. I knew in August that I could probably get David Simpson, Felipe Vega and Pedro Guzman via FA. So I worked the trade lines in September to bring in a pitching staff. Everything fell into place and we hit on everything. Without doing the prep I wouldn't have gone all in before signing any of the big bats.

It hardly ever works like that but even when things don't go my way these lists give me a plan B, C, ect.

Wow, Alan, that's amazing. I feel like a piker now.

I picked dreft because I love talent evaluations and while I enjoy the off season, I think we can all agree I'm not very good at it.

I just send my main spreadsheet through Notebook.lm and do what it tells me to do.
