2062 - Sao Paolo and Athens Trade A Shit Ton of Shit
Buckle Up. The Sao Paulo Pilots are up to their shenanigans, this time trading with the Athens Fighting Centaurs in a trade that sees 25 players and $10 million cash move.
Sao Paulo (SAO) sends
RP Max Dawe (IND) - $12.62M
The headliner in the deal, Dawe is a 34 year old right handed lunkheaded starting (mostly) pitcher. He's currently on a 1-year, $14.6 million deal that he signed last year, with none other than the Fighting Centaurs. I'm not gonna analyze that trade here. He made two starts and 16 relief appearances with Sao Paolo before shipping back to Greece.
He's good, with 3.2 WAR last year, and 2.9, 4.2, and 2.6 respectively going back to 2058. The salary is a LOT considering the GBC cap of $50 million, but Athens had only $19 on the books before this trade, and Sao Paulo needed to shed over $7 to get under the cap.
RP Esteban Galvan (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
Galván is a lefty reliever with a 30 POT and probably never makes a GBC roster. And he was in DFA so he could have been gotten for free, if one felt so inclined. (This gonna be a recurring theme)
RF Hirokumi Morita (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
23 year old lefty outfielder, good intangibles but with 20 POT at his age he's basically a nothing. Also was already DFA'd
RF Jason Calhoun (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
Calhoun is 26, and flamed out of the BBA minor league systems of San Fernando and Boise. He showed some promise, and you can squint and maybe see him in a DH role on a GBC team. Maybe. Oh, and he was also DFA'd.
RF Gerald Gray (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
25 POT switch hitting no fielding 24 year old who really shouldn't be on a roster unless you're desperate. He was, ahem, DFA'd already.
RF Luis Urbina (IND) - $259k -- DFA
Urbina is slightly interesting, he can't field and has shit intangibles, but he could be a halfway decent DH, at least against right handed pitching. But, again, he could have been gotten for free off waivers.
RP Guy Mickle (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
Another no work ethic no talent player that was on DFA. 26 years old, 25 POT
RP Matthew Orr (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
See Mickle, Guy but he's 25 years old
RP Miguel Rickey (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
If you don't mind pitchers that give up a lot of home runs, this 19 year old lefty could maybe sit in the back end of a rotation, someday, maybe. Oh, and he, like the previous two was also available for free in DFA
RP Hector Rivera (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
Rickey but two years younger and not even a glimmer of control. Was DFA'd
RP Elliot Roseveare (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
Oh, hey, here's something different. Same as the last two but 26 years old. (yes of course he was also available for free on waivers)
RP Brett Russell (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V
RP Hasan Safiy (IND) - MiL contract -- DFA
No control, could be a starter if he found some. WASN"T DFA'd!!!
CL Salim bin Khair al Din (IND) - MiL contract
24, no control to speak of.
Athens (ATH) sends
3B Aidan Reijnen (IND) - $522k / Retain 50%
35, mediocre but I guess acceptable second or third baseman. Meh.
SP Beni Ihilani (IND) - $261k / Retain 50%
Decent starter, 33 years old on a one year deal, cheap. Not a lights out guy but will give you a bunch of decent innings.
RP Dale Dyke (IND) - $565k / Retain 50%
Not great, but a passable middle reliever.
SP Hector Bernard (AAA) - MiL contract -- INJ
35 POT, 24 years old. Nothing here. Also, currently recovering from a strained forearm.
RP Kerehi Deli (AA) - MiL contract -- INJ
Big Stuff guy, left, bad control. Could be a good bullpen guy if he finished developing. On IL with herniated disk.
SP Yoshinori Sato (A) - MiL contract -- INJ
20 POT, shit intangibles. Why?
RP Brian Chappell (IND) - $261k / Retain 50%
30 years old, another guy like Ihilani above.
RP Amaka Zev (IND) - $261k / Retain 50%
Could be the most valuable player of all 25 in this deal. He's 25 years old and has all team control years remaining. Ratings say he'll be a decent mid-rotation starter.
RP Lynn James (IND) - $739k / Retain 50%
Back end starter, 26 years old with three years of team control left.
CF Saulo Bayi (IND) - $699k / Retain 50%
32, I guess maybe an OK backup corner outfielder?
$10,000,000 cash
Guess they're taking out a loan for this? Athens is currently $3 million in the red, so this puts them at $13 million in the red. They're taking on $12 million for Dawe, and retaining about $2 million, so that's a net salary impact of $10 million or so? So with the $10 million cash (that they don't have) that's a $20 million swing. Before the trade, the projected end of year balance was $17 million. This trade, right away, makes that -$3 million. And that's if they meet the projected revenue.
Alright. I don't know what I expected to see when I analyzed this. But, this does not look good for Athens. They're 7-14 right now, they're giving up some decent old guys, which, ok, doesn't really matter. They're taking on a good old guy, which, if if weren't for his supersized salary would be fine.
But they're also giving up a couple of decent starters with a combined 9 years of team control remaining and a not terrible relief prospect. I don't see any players in the return from Sao Paolo that justify what they're giving up.
And, did I mention that nearly every player they're getting from the Pilots was DFA'd because they signed like 500 free agents to minor league deals?
If Dawe was the last piece to a playoff team for Athens then sure, whatever. But yikes, I don't see a way that this makes sense for the Fighting Centaurs.
Also, guys, c'mon. Recte had to handle this trade manually and it's mostly fucking worthless players. Don't. Please.

Someone should have protested this trade just so Matt wouldn't have had to enter it.

I know that BBA-GBC trades can’t happen, but I want to see an alternate universe where Nashville and Sao Paolo trade with each other.

Anyway, why the cojones make this kind of trade? Just wait till a BBA team becomes available.
