Makeover Monday #4 - Hawaii Tropics

Post by CTBrewCrew » Sun May 10, 2020 10:37 am

Welcome to week 4 of Makeover Mondays. Hard to believe I've been milking this feature for 4 weeks now. Yes, I know its Sunday morning, and before I start, just want to say a "Happy Mothers Day" to all the special Moms in our lives.

For Makeover #4, we move outside the Heartland over to the Pacific, to the Hawaii Tropics. The land of Thomas Magnum, Don Ho, and the Brady Bunch's last ditch effort to boost ratings before resorting to Cousin Oliver.

This franchise has stayed in our 50th state for its entire history, only doing a name change from the Typhoons to the Tropics. It along with California, are two teams in the BBA with a state in their name.

In 70 years, they've had 11 GMs, including the infamous Al Hoot (02-13), made 16 playoff appearances, have been to 3 Landis games, winning all 3.

Aloha to the championship! But from what I understand Aloha also means good-bye as well. You know what else we can say good-bye to? You guessed their logo!!!

Let’s take a look at the old one.

Image

Ouch, this is rough. It not very inspiring. It kind of reminds me of when you put a coin into one of those stretchy cranky gizmos , that makes it come out all elongated with some road-side chachi logo on it, (and not the good one either). This logo also looks like it was put together with the help of no adult supervision.

The logo is a green oval with a couple of baseballs and what appear to be two palm trees, (which being a saltwater tank guy, always reminds me of Aiptasia).

Since this is Makeover Mondays, nothing personal buy they need a new look.

For those of you playing along at home, I'll Explain the rules again...

The Makeover had to meet these 3 criteria.
  • First, incorporate something into the new logo that has a baseball theme.
  • Second, use the teams existing color / uniform palette w/in the new look when at all possible.
  • Third, try to maintain a connection to the team’s history.
My design style is pretty simple. If the logo looks good in black and white, you have a good logo. Second, I’m a big believer in less is more when it comes to colors for unis and logos. Some of my favorite sports logos have this look. (I’ll leave my two fav sports teams off) - <wink>. If you look at the Raiders, Packers, and Colts in the NFL, each has two colors or 3 colors in their primary designs. The Yankees, Dodgers, and yes, even the Red Menace themselves, the St. Louis Cardinals. All have what I consider a classic logos / color scheme. I could go on, but just note, I am a card-carrying member of Uni-Watch 😉 and could talk about this for hours.

Any-who, with-out further ado… your 2042 Makeover Monday Hawaii Tropics

Image
As you can see in the new Makeover Monday version of the Tropics logo, I stayed with their primary colors of Yellow and Green, added some orange, and stayed with the same oval design. I replaced the aforementioned Aiptasia and tiny baseballs with a scene of a baseball setting sun surrounded by some tropical palm trees. The teams font has been updated, to have more of a "Tropical" feel in the teams colors of Green and Yellow.

Now on to their Hats & Uniforms

Hats: -- Overall not bad, way better than the logo. They had two hats, one for home and away games.

Old:

Home:

Pretty straight forward, a green hat with a green brim with the university of Hawaii H on the hat. Its a nice looking hat. But SINCE this is makeover Monday, I had to do something.

Image

Away:

Whoa! Give me a minute, I got to sit down for this one. This away hat in no way shape or form ties into ANYTHING with the previous logo or hat. A tri-colored hat with Blue sides, a blue-ish green front and brim , and a light blue under brim with a map of Hawaii. It reminds me of something else that is powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a Nurf ball...

Image

New:

First things first, I nixed the road hat. My feature, my rules. :D Like I said, I like their home hat, so I didn't do much here. I kept the "H" but updated to now have the team colors. I stayed with a Green hat, but changed to a yellow brim, and went with a "ocean blue" for the under-brim.

Image

Home Uni: - The Tropics had the two uniforms in game, one home and one away.

Old:

Looking at the current home one its not bad. White jersey, with Green and Orange piping, a green undershirt and collar. I like the use of a palm tree as the T in the Tropics logo. A crisp clean look, but we got to give it a makeover!

Image

Away Jersey:

All I can say is "Early 2000's softball uniform". Not a fan, this had to go.

Image

New:

OK, time for a confession. Just as with the powder blue road uni's I did for California, this design was inspired by another classic look from my childhood. The old tequila sunrise jerseys of the Houston Astros. My favorite player on the team was J.R. Richards. The man could throw a ball so fast, if he threw it through a car wash, it would come out dry on the other side. I thought the use of the teams tropical colors would pair itself well to the look. My feature my rules ;).

Image

Road Uni:

I have updated the Tropics road-unis to be a solid grey color with the word Hawaii in team font spelled out across the chest. The green undershirt and collar now fit in with the rest of the teams look. Thin orange, yellow and green piping along the sleeves and jersey buttons to add a little detail, again the teams new logo on the sleeve.

Hats will be available soon in the BBA Shop

Enjoy!

Up next Mexico City!

Damn. I love the new one. But call me boring...easy to please...old fashioned...whatever you want, but I always liked the old Tropics logo!

But I LOVE the new home Tropics uniform with the Tequila Sunrise/Astros style! And it looks great in that group team shot.

Is it just me that when I look at the new Tropics logo, it reminds me of the background in Tony Montana's room when he kills his boss Frank?
