Well one simple question to Ron about what the league-wide on-base percentage was led to a schooling session from him that opened new doors for me. While he did give me the answer for the league-wide number I was searching for, I decided to take a big leap and admit I had never pulled a report from OOTP(writing to disc and all that nonsense), but today was the day.

There is a link that I am going to share with all of you to do whatever you want to do with. In that link is a position by position breakdown of qualified players (3.1 at-bats per game) and what the averages are for many different categories from batting average to obp to home runs to wRC+ to even base running. I actually redid the spreadsheet because I thought wRC+ was pretty important when comparing what your catcher is as a whole at the plate vs other catchers.

This is completely based on what position they are currently set at in OOTP so if your CF is playing LF it’s going to skew a little. I did consider having a mega sheet that listed players who had any defensive rating at a position to compare them with others who are actually playing that position but I figured you could do that yourself for now if you wanted to see how your shortstop bat would compare to other second basemen.

Some interesting tidbits:
  • The position with the highest average wRC+ is right field and the lowest is shortstop as the league has clearly been willing to sacrifice offense for defense when it comes to the shortstop position. Semei Kwakou from Louisville is leading all right fielders with a 172 wRC+ but there are 6 right fielders who are qualified with a 150+ wRC with only 9 below 100 wRC+(average in the league).
  • Surprisingly, at third base is where you find the best base runners with a 1.20 average base running runs added. Those at the hot corner have stolen an average of 12.72 bases this season while getting caught 3.56 times.
  • Most positions are even when it comes to WAR added currently, with only center field jumping ahead at an average of 1.862 WAR added through the season so far.
  • Center fielders as a group apparently are the luckiest as they have reached on 32% of the balls they have hit into play. Call it the speed difference, or call it luck? They have also stolen the most bases on a consistent stretch stealing an average of 17 bases and being caught 6 times, with Ronnie Hubbard leading the way stealing 36 bases and being caught just twice.
Anyhow…Have fun with this.
