2062 – Biggest Road Draws?

The Wizard of Viz’s latest effort got me wondering about attendance, but in my own twisted way I asked the question backward—as in, which BBA teams travel well. In other words, which BBA teams draw the best on the road?

We get raw attendance odd StatsPlus, but there’s no way to see this elsewise.

Except…

I realized…

I’ve got my box-score/gamelogs script…and that script pulls attendance by each game, and also lists home and visiting teams. It wouldn’t be hard to do a simple sorting on visitor. So, of course, I did it. The results—listed below in ranked order of top attendance of visiting teams—are interesting, because of course they are.

Who would have had Boise as the top draw in the league? Or Bikini second? I will say that Bikini has a crapton of popular players, so does that make a difference on the road?

I don’t know. Maybe it does.

Perhaps this suggests national popularity draws on the road and local popularity draws at home? I’ve never thought of that, but it makes some degree of sense. I’d probably code something like that into the game if I thought of it, anyway. Doing a scan of a few teams doesn’t suggest that’s a large influence, but that’s just a scan.

Montreal and San Fernando third and fourth make some degree of sense.

A Look Through the Rest

Sacramento and Nashville, on the other hand, are #1 and #2 at home draws, but #30 and #12 on the road. Chicago draws like crap at home (#32), but does better on the road (#22).

It makes sense that poorer teams with poor home draws would be better on the road simply because they are playing better teams who are attracting more fans than they normally would. This suggests I need to do some additional work if I want to really follow this up.

In other words, this little cut has been interesting and fun, but I think that to do a real study I need to ask the question differently. My brain is spinning now, spinning so fast I assume you can hear the rattle. Yes. I think I can do that. Maybe. The right question (I think, but I’ll lay out here in case someone has better ideas) is to calculate the average attendance at each ballpark, and then compare the average attendance of each visiting team at each ballpark, and see which way a team’s appearance moves the needle.

Yes. This is a fun table, but I think that would be better.

Better still to adjust by day of the week—which we know adjusts attendance, too, and which I could do. With a little time, anyway. That could be fun.

Until then I think Boise and Bikini fans can look at this data and pretend to be self-important, which, of course, is the whole purpose of fandom, now, isn’t it?

I’m assuming this is mostly a function of how the days of the week broke in the schedule and it means you and Boise played the most weekend games on the road. It follows, therefore, that you also played the least home games on the weekends. Tough luck.

I did a quick a dirty calculation of the impact the schedule had with all the weekend off days this season. I think each team lost around $500K of revenue as a result. Its not enough to really be noticeable but it makes things just a little tighter for those of us pushing our finances to the limit.

Interesting feature.

I'm surprised how popular we are on the road. Logic would dictate that even in the New York area there are going to be some people who are fans of Atlantic City even if the Robins were dominant. Since there isn't a New England club in the BBA, I guess maybe Montreal, Atlantic City, and ourselves would divide that part of the country?

Well....this was really interesting, and makes at least a little more sense.

I took some time and wrote another script that rolls through that same box score data, calculating the average attendance at each home park by day of the week, then going back through and comparing each team's road performance by that same day of the week for each home park.

For example, if your opponent averages 35,000 fans a game on Tuesday, and you play a Tuesday game that draws 36,000 fans, you get a +1,000 for that game. I then average those numbers by day of the week. Finally, I multiply that all out to get a value that is basically "seats over average" that each team sells on the road.

Here's the table:

2062-ROAD-ATT.PNG

So the "VAR" columns are the average seats per game each team drew above that expected from the home team's average attendance.

Interesting that Boise is still so high. Bikini drops down to where our popular players maybe makes sense. Nashville rises up, as does CCJ. Oddly, Sacramento is on the lower side. But so are some of the team's you would expect to be there.

I have no idea what to do with this information, but it's fun. For example, Bikini drew well on the road on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, but considerably below average on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

My main interpretation of that data (thank you Ron for sourcing that) is to look at teams with the highest number of weekend road games and surmise they lost out on attendance. For example, Nashville played nearly the max number of road games Friday/Saturday/Sunday so you could say they lost out on some attendance $.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are big surf days in Hawaii. That explains the low attendance for the Trops.

Yeap 7 Saturday homes games all season. 😜. We do like our outdoors.

I thought also someone did a feature on gate share +/-

That’s part of our revenue stream. So if I’m playing a powerhouse like Nashville they are giving me more $ to get my butt kicked?

Higher attendance at Nashville when I come to town means more $ for me?

Yup, gate share is at 40%. So if you play at Nashville in a sold out stadium, you'll make about $407,640 just for that one game. That doesn't sound like a lot but it is. On the flip side, New Orleans played at Brooklyn on Tuesday September 12th and only made about $18,802 for the day.

In case anyone is wondering how I got these numbers. I did season tickets revenue divided by ticket price and then divide that by 81 games to get season ticket holders.

Then subtracted attendance by season ticket holders(home team keeps all of ST sales)

Multiplied that numbers by ticket price and then by .40 to get away team share.

I rounded off some numbers just to be easy. I also know that Brooklyn just raised prices from $5 to $15. I used $5 just to get the extreme example. So don't take these as exact numbers. It's a just for fun estimation.

http://montybrewster.net/forums/viewtop ... 61#p279161 - I updated the Viz to include now the total attendance that each team drew that visited your park and got Avg Attendance for that team in your park. I was surprised to see that DM drew the lowest in-game attendance totals for Nashville - only 240,817 over 7 games.

Yeah. I should be able to adjust the script to run against the GBC Box score data, too.

That should be a fun little project. :)
