All right, enough with the over analyzing everything. Here’s one at least mostly for fun. I mean, I would analyze the heck out of these guys if I could—our, should I now say these people, since one is mot really a guy unless you stretch the idiom in way it’s not really designed for. I’m talking, of course, about managers.
Who are they?
How do they differ from team-to-team?
I pull this data every now and again, mostly to just stare at and let my brain ponder. You know? Kind of the same thing I do at art museums. Walk from room to room with my hands clasped behind my back, pondering what the artist was thinking as they put paint on canvas. That’s what our GMs are, right? From Rembrandt to Picasso to Monet to Pollock, we all have out styles.
Hehehe … who is the Van Gogh of the group? Certainly not shoeless, or he’d be called earless, instead, am I right?
Ba-dum-bump.
Mostly I decided to write this feature to give us a place (while we wait for the league file to convert over) to chat about our managers. So, yeah … what do you think of yours? How do you choose them? What do you think they impact. I mean, if I can’t analyze them, at least I can gather your ideas, right?
Anyway, here are the managers of the Brewster, by division.
Atlantic

Iván Correa | CHA | ATL | 60 | 1 | Inexp | $940,000 | 5 | $0 | 0 | Controlling | Conventional |
Good times.
On the whole the Atlantic seems to be home to your run of the mill workaday skipper. They’ve all got multiple years left on their deals, and all of them are young enough that they will all be around for a bit (one assumes). I expect CCJ’s Jimmy Diaz (baseball’s highest paid manager) to rise in stature as the team wins more and more. Aside, is it him or Hector Silva?
It may be worth noting the Crawdad’s Luis Hernandez is baseball’s only Temperamental Manager. Something that makes me wish OOTP had better umpire ejection code. He’s also Unorthodox—one of only three in the BBA. Watching games in New Orleans has to be fun.
Frontier
Name | TM | Div | Age | EXP | Rep | SAL | YRS | ExtSal | ExtYrs | Type | Style |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Tony Franco | CLG | FRO | 61 | 24 | Outstanding | $1,500,000 | 3 | $0 | 0 | Normal | Conventional |
Henry Rectenberg | LV | FRO | 48 | 12 | Outstanding | $1,585,000 | 3 | $0 | 0 | Personable | Tactician |
Mario Contreras | BOI | FRO | 60 | 20 | Good | $2,945,000 | 3 | $0 | 0 | Normal | Conventional |
Marquise Cattaneo | RMO | FRO | 58 | 22 | Good | $2,455,000 | 4 | $0 | 0 | Personable | Conventional |
Markus O'Byrne | MEX | FRO | 40 | 5 | OK | $1,095,000 | 3 | $0 | 0 | Normal | Conventional |
Thad Meyer | PHX | FRO | 50 | 12 | OK | $1,200,000 | 4 | $0 | 0 | Personable | Conventional |
Johnnie Oh | SA | FRO | 61 | 24 | Fair | $2,390,000 | 4 | $0 | 0 | Controlling | Conventional |
David Pinto | AUS | FRO | 46 | 10 | Fair | $2,100,000 | 3 | $0 | 0 | Normal | Conventional |
With Markus O’Byrne (40) and David Pinto (46) joining Rectenberg (48) in the Under 50 club, the Frontier is home to the youngest fleet of skippers in the league. In addition, I can’t help but note that with the exception of Rectenberg’s “Tactician” tag, every one manager in the division is “Conventional.” What does that say about the GMs in the division? Dunno. Maybe nothing. DO they even look at this tag as they hire?
Heartland
Name | TM | Div | Age | EXP | Rep | SAL | YRS | ExtSal | ExtYrs | Type | Style |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Brent Ross | NSH | HRT | 60 | 6 | LEGENDARY | $700,000 | 5 | $0 | 0 | Controlling | Sabermetric |
Gerald Brandt | TWC | HRT | 56 | 19 | Outstanding | $3,390,000 | 5 | $0 | 0 | Easygoing | Smallball |
Mel Jenkins | DM | HRT | 64 | 12 | Excellent | $1,999,999 | 4 | $0 | 0 | Normal | Tactician |
Sylvester Reed | OMA | HRT | 49 | 12 | Good | $1,990,000 | 5 | $0 | 0 | Easygoing | Conventional |
Bill Inkster | YS9 | HRT | 65 | 24 | Average | $1,645,000 | 4 | $0 | 0 | Personable | Smallball |
Bernardo Herrera | LOU | HRT | 57 | 22 | OK | $1,720,000 | 1 | $1,800,000 | 5 | Normal | Conventional |
Will Myers | MAD | HRT | 65 | 24 | Fair | $2,080,000 | 4 | $0 | 0 | Normal | Conventional |
Rocky Wattson | CHI | HRT | 43 | 5 | Fair | $785,000 | 3 | $0 | 0 | Personable | Conventional |
Next comes Twin Cities Gerald Brandt, who is the division’s highest-paid skipper (and second highest in baseball). The River Monsters have won a lot of games with him at the helm, but is he worth five times Ross? (or better stated, isn’t Ross worth five times as much?) As always, Chad finds ways to squeeze value per $.
Of the others, Bill Inkster has a fun back history with the Nine. Rocky Wattson seems well-matched with Chicago. At least it makes me happy the Sox are guided by a guy named Rocky. Louisville made a statement when the extended Bernardo Herrera five more years. His first five years haven’t seen a lot of success, but the management team doesn’t seem to blame him.
Perhaps it’s of note that two of the three of BBA’s most ardent practitioners of Small Ball are in the Heartland?
Pacific
Name | TM | Div | Age | EXP | Rep | SAL | YRS | ExtSal | ExtYrs | Type | Style |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Fernando Pacheco | SAC | PAC | 55 | 15 | LEGENDARY | $2,795,000 | 1 | $3,200,000 | 5 | Normal | Conventional |

Hung-k'uei Cui | VAN | PAC | 58 | 21 | Good | $2,500,000 | 5 | $0 | 0 | Personable | Conventional |
Gonzalo Escobar | SFB | PAC | 61 | 6 | Average | $750,000 | 5 | $0 | 0 | Normal | Unorthodox |
Mons Raider | POR | PAC | 51 | 5 | OK | $2,020,000 | 5 | $0 | 0 | Easygoing | Sabermetric |

Kate Fiscus | BIK | PAC | 54 | 14 | Inexp | $1,100,000 | 4 | $0 | 0 | Personable | Unorthodox |
Overall, the Pacific division carries a pretty diverse set of both personalities and baseball mindsets.
All total, five of these managers guided their teams to the playoffs, with San Fernando’s Gonzalo Escobar, Portland’s Mons Raider, and Long Beach’s Mike Ellis joining Pacheco and Fiscus in the big dance. Ellis will be in his contract year during 2062. We’ll see how that plays out.
At 66 years old, Valencia’s Omar Sosa could well be at some risk of not working through what remains of his contract, which has at least three seasons left. One wonders if Gregg Greathouse would just as soon he step down sooner than later. It will be interesting to see what Hung-k’uei Cui will do in his second season in Vancouver, and one also wonders if Hall of Famer Mons Raider, who at 51 has already won a Monty, will establish himself as the division’s next Fernando Pacheco.
What is your take?
So, there we have it. This is where I hang up and listen to the responses.
Managers: What are they good for?
