Increase PP for Media Guide Contributions

One of the things that makes the BBA unique is the Media Guide. We all look forward to reading it. And the work that goes into the guide is tremendous, both for design and writing.

But one thing I noticed is that the points you get for working on material for the Guide don't really match up for the work involved.

For example, a league feature on the forums and a general media guide entry are both 4 points. Given that the former also lets you get more posts to the forum (and therefore, more points, especially when replying to comments), it feels like it makes more sense to place things as a feature instead of a media guide entry.

Similarly, previewing a whole division is 8 points in the guide. You can get 12 by doing about the same amount of words looking at just two teams in forum previews.

I think to help ensure people who work on the guide get what they deserve, PP should see a modest bump, maybe by 2 points for general to go to 6, art to 6, clarifying what special features get 10, and maybe move division previews up to 12 or maybe 15.

Trying for a positive suggestion here since I think we all need to focus on what makes the BBA the best online league.

Two big thumbs-up for this suggestion. When we recruit for the league, one of the things we always trumpet is the media guide, but we needs to do what’s necessary to make sure it continues to be worth bragging about.

I'm not slighting your articles, they are great, well thought out and researched. But not everybody can do what you do time after time.

Maybe establish word minimums for the certain categories. Division Previews a certain amount, etc. I can think of a few articles that are just as impactful but shorter and the best ones get a reward in the end anyways.

I'm not slighting your articles, they are great, well thought out and researched. But not everybody can do what you do time after time.

Yep. I agree. Ultimately the counter should always have some discretion for awarding points.

I would suggest we not overthink things too much lest we create too much structure around something that's supposed to be nothing more than a celebration of baseball nerdiness.

Doing a division preview for the guide also includes a team preview for each team in the division based on the way we currently are asked to volunteer for such work. So 8 points for the division and 48 points collectively for the team previews (8 teams times 6) for a total of 56. It is not clear in the PP tracker, so I suggest that a division preview be awarded points on this basis because it would be strange to have someone do a division preview and not the underlying team previews. Put another way, we should not allow someone to do a division preview for the guide without doing the underlying team previews. I would support increasing the points to help incentivize this since I believe last time it was not easy to get volunteers. Doing previews of any kind for the forums should be less because otherwise folks are less likely to take on the bigger media guide project that a division preview with previews of all division teams presents.

Can I also suggest a right of first refusal is given to the writer of last year's media guide preview of a division? Those who have volunteered should be rewarded with priority for doing the preview of the division again. It is a lot of work and deserved.

I enjoyed doing the division preview last year, but it was a lot more work.

I support this as well. Having had to put the thing together for a few years its a significant amount of work. So i increased that amount after i stopped doing it. Im all for increasing it.
