Pending retirements??

Post by cheekimonk » Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:11 pm

I wonder if there is a way for the league to implement retirement rumors or even early announcements of retirement by players. I ask because 40-year-old Riles is in the last year of his deal and I'm not going to re-sign him, but I also think it would be a neat, kind of random factor that mirrors real life.

As an example, Chipper Jones will be a Brave as long as be plays, but he's flirted with retirement the last 2 years and the front office has to plan for if he does or if he doesn't. Also, in 2010, Billy Wagner announced before the year that he was retiring so the Braves could groom Kimbrel and Venters while still getting Wagner's services. As it us now in OOTP, you only get retirement announcements when the season is over.

What I'm thinking, if the Commish can retire a player manually, that we come up with some way to randomize retirements for all players over a certain age and decide whether they are thinking about it or will go ahead and announce. Thoughts?

Players retire when they want to, if you want him to remain a one team player you'll have to shell out the bucks! Stop trying to wriggle out of it you tight git

LOL! Riles is done. If someone wants him after this season they can find him on the FA market. If he made the HoF it would be as a Kraken anyway. But his situation got me to thinking about the real life scenarios that are missing from OOTP and if there was a way we could recreate it here...

And then there's the Brett Favre type who retires and then unretires every year as soon as he reaches about 38.
The odd unretirement might be nice in OOTP.
Yes, a commish can retire any player any time he wants, but I think it's a function best left to the game.

WHEN he makes it to the Hall, I'm afraid it will have to be as a Monarch.

They do have the random occasional unretirement.

As for manual retirements - i am def against. Players do retire, and lets leave it at that.

I know they retire, but all retirements are at the end of the season. I'd like the drama of "thinking about it," "this is my last year," and the flip-flops, too. Kind of like you offer a guy an extension and he says he plans on testing free agency, you could have a guy say "Boss, I'm thinking of hanging it up after this year." I guess I'm in the minority. Probably be hard to randomize, too.

Leaving this in the game for now. No need to overcomplicate things even more...however, this is a good suggestion for future versions of OOTP, Ben. I suggest you post it on the OOTP Forums.
