Interesting Table of the Day...BBA BABIP by Zone

Post by RonCo » Wed May 07, 2025 3:58 pm

If you were perusing Discord you know I've been sidetracked by BABIP and Line Drives today. Along the way, I came up with this table, which I've been staring at for the past hour or so in several different ways in attempts to learn something about Bikini's defense and pitching. I'm not sure I've had any real success at that study, but the BBA table is kind of interesting to me, so now it can be interesting to you!

Or not. :)

Deep balls at right fielders inexplicably hits twice as often as deep balls at left fielders

I wonder if it has anything to do with park factors.

I doubt they’re twice as hitter friendly but that could be part of it. Lefty hitters being better hitters on average could be another.

The Heartland's BABIP (AVG) factors are considerably better for LHB, the Frontier's are weighted to RHB, but a little less. The rest are about even. There are things with Heartland's doubles, too, which would make sense for BABIP in deep outfield zones, but those get offset by the Frontier's.

It could be an offset on LHB Gap ratings, too.

Or it could be randomness--though that does seem a big gap for it to be truly random.

It's an interesting question.
