Anybody else been scratching their heads??

Post by cheekimonk » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:57 pm

Am I the only one perusing this year's crop of FAs and looking at the ratings one hand, then their stats on the other, and being completely dumbfounded? We can discuss specific guys later but there are some real enigmas on the board this offseason...

Oh, yeah. Jim Cramer, anyone?? Yeah, sure, I'll pay you 8 million a year to be f***ing terrible.

Free agent crop is always like this. Why else would most players be allowed to get to free agency unless they have some sort of wart or financial issue?

So how would signing Turrell work, since he is Type A free agent, as far as losing a draft pick...? Would MDR get to draft in the MBBA draft order for one round? See this is not making sense to me.

Wish I had a good answer for you. The best I can give is....we have to wait and see.

I'm seriously considering eliminating supplemental picks after this season.

So does that mean we will be able to trade picks? As I recall, the supplemental issue is one of the reasons we couldn't trade them.

I'm fundamentally opposed to trading draft picks for any reason.

I am trying to be aggressive in FA this year. Though, not sure if anyone will bid on Cramer this year.

I still think that it's funny that of all the players in the league who could have had a career-ending injury at 27, it would be Brett Favre.

No I'm comparing your "fundamental opposition" to more of a change of mind. You love being a "pioneer" but can't you just be someone who looked at all sides and changed their minds? ;)

I could change my mind on anything, I suppose. I just think that allowing trading draft picks creates more unbalanced trades than not being able to trade draft picks.

I understand why people would want to, but I think it creates a level of complexity and honestly, like you said, unbalanced trades. Plus, since ownership on some teams is transient it creates issues.

What if prior owners had traded pix for Phoenix. Mike then comes in with no ablity to better his team then through Free agency or trades, since his picks are gone. Not trading picks creates at least one mechanism for owners who are new to start to create a stamp on their team without it being handicapped by prior ownership.

While I generally favor trading draft picks, that's the first good argument I have heard against the idea.

Yea I equate draft picks to a credit card. you can buy something now but you gotta pay later, and if you don't plan on paying (leaving) or ditching out and leaving your wife to pay, what good are you? ;)

Exactly. A lot of the rules we get proposed have to do with evening the field. Trading draft picks can cripple a new GM coming in.

I agree. especially in regard to transient ownership.
A guy could really mess up a team long term by trading away draft picks, then deciding to leave the league.
